Basics of Design Testing

The test participant’s outfit, because we want to analyze our participants as thoroughly as possible

The test participant’s non-verbal behavior, because it may reveal where the participant is struggling with the design

What should a note-taker notice and capture?


Bringing a large stopwatch for the participants so they can see if they are still in time 

Preparing needed materials such as scripts, pens and paper, or laptops

Having moderator skills in case you need to step in during the session 

Having knowledge of all the tasks in the test session and their solutions

Be talkative: Tell the participant regularly during the test session how valuable they are.

Be observant: Pay attention and capture details during the test session.

Be unobtrusive: Have the ability to fade into the background, so that the participant feels like they are alone with the moderator.

Be creative: Spend time during the test session coming up with new ideas on how to improve the design.

Be neutral and receptive: Be calm and don’t show strong emotions, and appear open to what the participant does and says.
