Monitoring Elastic Compute Nodes Using SAP HANA Cloud Central

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to monitor the workload generated on the elastic compute nodes.

Monitoring Elastic Compute Nodes

Monitor the current status of elastic compute nodes (ECNs) in your instance and manage ECNs using SAP HANA Cloud Central applications.

Privileges

You must have the HANA Cloud Administrator or HANA Cloud Viewer role to view the information on the Elastic Compute Nodes tab.

Monitoring ECN Resource Usage

On the instance Overview page, select the Elastic Compute Node tab to see ECN usage metrics. The Overview (Month to Date) section displays usage for all ECNs in your instance. It helps ensure that the workload is evenly distributed across all nodes.

The image displays the measured monitoring data in the Elastic Compute Node application.

Memory Usage Per Node

The Memory Usage per Node chart shows the current memory status for the coordinator node and up to five ECNs. If you have more than five ECNs, the most active nodes are shown. The information is taken from the monitoring view M_SERVICE_COMPONENT_MEMORY.

Working Memory
Shows memory used for processing tasks on column and row table data on the coordinator and ECNs, regardless of the routing method.
Table
Shows memory used to store table data for column and row tables.
System
Shows the memory required by the system for tasks such as caches, monitoring, statistical data, and system tables.
Other
Shows (if applicable) the memory used by tasks not covered by the categories listed above.

In the chart, click on a row of a node to open a popover window with details of memory usage.

To the right of the chart, the number of ECNs is shown, as well as the total ECN usage details:

Total Used Memory
Indicates the percentage (%) of the total memory provisioned for all currently running ECNs.
Memory Allocation Limit
Indicates the memory available for use, after applying the global memory allocation limit configured for your instance to protect it from out-of-memory situations. For example, if you have two ECNs each with 40 GB, and your instance has a global memory allocation limit of 80%, then each node has a limit of 32 GB.

The Memory Usage per Node chart is intended to show workload distribution across locations that can be used for routing with workload classes. It shows locations stored in the monitoring view M_TABLE_PLACEMENT_LOCATIONS and does not show replica nodes or worker nodes.

Links to ECN-Related Applications

Use the links provided in the Memory Usage per Node chart to access related applications for managing ECNs:

Manage ECNs
Opens the Manage Configuration page, where you can modify, add, or delete ECNs in your instance.
Manage Workload Classes
Opens the Workload Classes Management page, where you can, for example, edit routing locations or modify the subset of queries mapped to a workload class.

Elastic Compute Nodes Section

The Elastic Compute Nodes section shows a breakdown of used and available compute, memory, and storage resources for all ECNs. It also shows the number of workload classes routing workload to the ECNs. Select the three dots (…) to modify the ECN configuration or navigate to the Table Distribution app.

The following demonstration shows how to access the ECN monitoring from the SAP HANA Cloud Central.

Monitoring ECN Consumption

On the instance Overview page, in the Consumption tile, you can see a breakdown of the resource usage of your instance for the month to date, including ECN use. This can help you manage the cost of running your SAP HANA Cloud instance.

The image displays measured consumption data in the Consumption Monitor application.

To see detailed ECN usage metrics, select any of the numbers on the Consumption tile. This opens the Consumption Monitor Consumption Details table. You can see the memory, compute, and storage sizes provisioned for ECNs for your instance. Memory and compute resources are measured in capacity units (CUs), which can be converted into your currency using the SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) Estimator. Storage is calculated separately. For more information, see the documentation on the SAP HANA Cloud Capacity Unit Estimator and the SAP BTP Estimator.

Summary

Monitor and manage ECNs using SAP HANA Cloud Central applications. View ECN usage metrics on the instance Overview page under the Elastic Compute Node tab to ensure even workload distribution. The Memory Usage Per Node chart displays memory status for the coordinator node and up to five ECNs. The chart also shows the percentage of total memory provisioned and the memory allocation limit. In the Consumption tile on the Overview page, with detailed metrics including memory, compute, and storage sizes, measured in capacity units (CUs) and convertible to currency using the SAP BTP Estimator.
