Create a Service Instance and a Service Binding in SAP BTP, Kyma Runtime

Usage Scenario

After you have learned that you can use services offered by SAP BTP in SAP BTP, Kyma runtime, this exercise will show you how to create service instances and service bindings in Kyma dashboard. You will also learn how to display them in the SAP BTP cockpit.

Task Flow

In this exercise, you will perform the following steps:

Set up a new namespace.
Create a service instance using Kyma dashboard.
Verify if the service instance is created in the SAP BTP cockpit.
Create a service binding using Kyma dashboard.
Verify if the service binding is created in the SAP BTP cockpit.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, ensure that the following prerequisites are met:

You have created a SAP BTP, Kyma runtime instance in the SAP BTP subaccount. See Deploying a Kubernetes Cluster with Kyma on SAP BTP.
You have configured kubectl to interact with your SAP BTP, Kyma runtime instance, and you have access to Kyma dashboard. See Setting and Configuring Kubectl for Kyma and Accessing Your Kyma Runtime Instance Using Kyma Dashboard.
You have an entitlement for the Free Tier service plan of SAP Credential Store.
Hint
In this exercise, we use the SAP Credential Store service to exemplify the service management process in Kyma runtime. To use this service, you must assign an entitlement to your subaccount first. To learn how to do it, see Manage Entitlements Using the Cockpit. Instead of creating an instance of SAP Credential Store, you can use another SAP BTP service. Choose it from SAP Discovery Center and make sure you have assigned the necessary entitlement to your subaccount.

Task 1: Set up a New Namespace

Steps

From your subaccount overview in SAP BTP cockpit, follow the link to Kyma dashboard.
Go to Namespaces and choose Create.
In the Name field, enter service-management and choose Create.
If successful, Kyma dashboard displays the details of the service-management namespace. Its status is active.

Task 2: Create a Service Instance Using Kyma Dashboard

Steps

To create a service instance with the SAP Credential Store service, follow these steps:

Go to Service Management → Service Instances and choose Create.
Enter the following mandatory parameters:
1. Name: credential-store
2. Offering Name: credstore
3. Plan Name: free
  Note
  If you use a different service, you can check the parameters Offering Name and Plan Name in Service Marketplace of the SAP BTP cockpit.
Choose Create.
Result
If successful, the service instance appears in Kyma dashboard. Its status is Provisioned.

Task 3: Check the Service Instance in the SAP BTP Cockpit

Steps

Navigate to your SAP BTP cockpit and then go to Services → Instances and Subscriptions.
Check if the instance Credential Store is displayed in the list of instances. If it isn't, navigate back to your Kyma dashboard to double-check that the status of your set up service instance is Provisioned.
Note
You can only create, delete, and manage service instances and service bindings in Kyma dashboard. You can't do it in the SAP BTP cockpit. However, if you want to check service details, like service names or plans, you can do so in the SAP BTP cockpit.

Task 4: Create a Service Binding Using Kyma Dashboard

Steps

Create a service binding for the service instance you have just set up. This automatically creates a Kubernetes Secret with the binding's metadata and credentials. Follow these steps:

In Kyma dashboard, go to the service-management namespace.
Go to Service Management → Service Bindings and choose Create.
Enter the following required parameters:
1. Name: credstore-binding
2. Service Instance Name: credential-store
Choose Create.
Result
lf successful, Kyma dashboard displays the details of the credstore-binding service binding. Its status is Provisioned.

Task 5: Check the Service Binding in the SAP BTP Cockpit

Steps

To verify that the service binding you set up in your Kyma dashboard has also been successfully created in the SAP BTP cockpit, follow these steps:

Navigate to your SAP BTP Cockpit and then go to Services→Instances and Subscriptions .
Click on the credential-store service instance to view its details. You see the credstore-binding service binding.
Note
You can only create, delete, and manage service instances and service bindings in Kyma dashboard. You can't do it in the SAP BTP cockpit. However, if you want to check service details, like service names or plans, you can do so in the SAP BTP cockpit.

Result

Congratulations! You have successfully completed this exercise about service management in SAP BTP, Kyma runtime. You created a service instance as well as a service binding in Kyma dashboard and verified their status in the SAP BTP cockpit.
