Leveraging Joule for Enhanced Planning

Demonstrating the transactional capabilities of the Joule copilot in SAP IBP

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to explain the transactional capabilities of Joule in SAP IBP.

Transactional Capabilities

Switching between apps to run a forecast, share a scenario, or check for data errors can be cumbersome. What if you could perform these core tasks from a single, unified, conversational interface?

The image illustrates how Joule guides users through selecting, reviewing, and running a saved job, then provides confirmation and status insights as part of a unified conversational workflow.

Transactional (e.g., running jobs via Joule): For instance, a planner needs to start a predefined demand forecast job. Joule guides the user through the required steps, asks for any missing parameters, and confirms before running the job. After the run, if the planner wants to understand job performance or investigate issues, they can ask Joule for a result summary or error analysis and Joule presents this info interactively.

The image conveys how Joule enables users to share various planning-related content and manage access through a conversational interface integrated with the planning workspace.

Another real-world example: Planners and administrators can share content (e.g., alert definitions, planner workspaces) via Joule. During a planning cycle, one planner shares a scenario with another, gives write access so the colleague can adjust parameters and Joule coordinates the transition and (read or write) permissions, improving collaboration.

The image illustrates how Joule helps users identify and analyze master data inconsistencies by providing conversational diagnostics connected to the master data management workspace.

If, after a scheduled job, errors appear, and it’s suspected that the cause is related to master data inconsistencies, the planner can ask Joule to run a "master data health check." Joule analyzes the current state, returns a summary of suspicious entries and helps drill down to the root cause.

The image summarizes how the system displays compliance statuses for various security recommendation categories, showing which items meet or fail required data protection and privacy standards.

System compliance can also be checked via Joule. For example, if new security guidelines are in place, the planner asks Joule to verify system compliance. Joule checks system parameters, highlights any outstanding issues, and may suggest remediation—these features are being built out using agentic workflows, foreshadowing future AI agents.

Lesson Summary

  • Running Jobs via Joule guides users through selecting predefined jobs, confirms parameters, executes tasks like demand forecasting and provides interactive result summaries or error analysis without switching applications.
  • Sharing Content via Joule enables planners and administrators to share scenarios, alert definitions, workspaces and manage permissions conversationally, improving collaboration across planning cycles.
  • Diagnostics and Compliance allows users to request master data health checks and system compliance verification, identifying issues and receiving remediation suggestions through conversational workflows.
