Exploring Joule's Interaction Patterns and Document Grounding Capabilities in SAP IBP

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to describe how Joule's three interaction patterns enhance planner productivity in SAP IBP.

Joule Interaction Patterns

Ever find yourself digging through documentation or clicking through multiple screens to find what you need? What if you could just ask a question or state your goal in plain language?

Joule in IBP is accessible in the web interface. In the Planner Workspace, three interaction patterns are available.

Joule is available everywhere in the web interface. In the Planner Workspace, you can interact with Joule using three distinct patterns.

  1. The informational pattern, which is for asking questions about SAP documentation. This can be enhanced with document grounding, a process that combines generative large language models with advanced information retrieval. This improves the quality and accuracy of responses without the time and expense of fine-tuning the model for your company-specific data. To use it, you connect Joule to a SharePoint page where you can upload documents like HR policies or tariff agreements. Joule can then answer questions and provide summaries based on that content.
  2. The navigational pattern allows you to tell Joule which IBP application you want to go to. You can either name a specific app or describe what you want to do, and Joule will provide a direct navigation link.
  3. The transactional pattern is where you can use Joule as a unified interface to initiate transactions within Fiori apps, directly from the Joule interface.
This graphic explains that SAP Joule uses AI assisted document grounding to answer user questions from a customer’s own business documents connected via SharePoint by combining large language models with information retrieval to improve response quality without extra training, with further details in the accompanying text.

What is Grounding?

"Grounding" is a process that combines generative large language models (LLMs) with advanced information retrieval to improve the quality and accuracy of responses, without the time, complexity, and expense of training or fine-tuning an LLM with company-specific data. Grounding uses a customer’s own knowledge sources (e.g. travel policy, enablement content, service manuals, FAQs, etc.) to supplement an LLM's internal representation of information, which can help models be more accurate and reliable.

Grounding can also help models build trust by citing source documents, lowering ambiguity and reducing the possibility of hallucination.

Lesson Summary

  • Informational Pattern enables users to ask questions about SAP documentation, enhanced by document grounding that connects Joule to company-specific knowledge sources like SharePoint for accurate, sourced responses.
  • Navigational Pattern allows users to tell Joule which IBP application they need or describe their task, receiving direct navigation links to the relevant Fiori app or module.
  • Transactional Pattern provides a unified interface to initiate transactions and retrieve KPIs directly within the Joule interface, streamlining data retrieval and task execution across IBP applications.
