Explore Assets

Assume a user wants to find the objects created in the previous units but are not familiar with their technical or business names, only that it contains both global and regional sales data, and the data loaded is tagged to be of excellent quality.

Let’s explore an option to find the objects with the available information.

  1. Narrow the results to search for Assets only.

Searching across All objects will also return results from Data Marketplace, Terms and KPIs.

  2. Enter sales in the search toolbar and select Search.

  3. View the results.

Let’s narrow down the result set even further and Filter by Criteria.

  1. Open Show Filter on the left.

  2. Scroll down in the Filter Area and select Show All Filters.

We want to find the filter for the data quality tag.

  3. Select the Data Quality filter, and check Excellent, then select OK.

Now the result set is narrowed down to one asset.

  1. Select the Analytic Model, Sales Analytic Model.

  2. The Overview tab display properties extracted from the source system, and detailed metadata.

The Source properties include the asset’s business and technical names, system name, type, container name (this is the space name for assets in SAP Datasphere), and more …

The Details include measures, business and technical names, type, and more …

  3. Select the Semantic Enrichment tab.

This tab displays a list of business glossary terms, KPIs and tags that are linked to the asset.

Explore the Terms section.

  1. The Terms section, displays the Best Bike Glossary glossary and linked terms.

  2. Select the Business Partner term and view it’s information.

Keywords are descriptive names for the term.

Synonyms means nearly the same thing as the original term.

Definition tab fully describe the term.

Use the formatting tool to enhance definitions by applying text formatting and adding multimedia content.

  3. Select the Related Objects tab.

Assign terms to assets, KPIs, and other terms to provide meaning to the assets.

  1. Go back to the Sales Analytic Model.

Explore the KPIs section.

  1. The KPIs section displays a list of all key performance indicators (KPIs) that are linked to the asset.

KPIs are used to measure progress towards a goal or objective.

  2. Select the Global Gross Sales KPI.

On the Definition tab, view the:

    • Measure Type
    • Default Unit of Measure
    • Threshold ranges
    • Calculation
    • Detailed Documentation of the definition

  3. Go back to the Sales Analytic Model.

Explore the Tags section.

  1. The Tags section displays a hierarchical list of all tags that are linked to the asset.

Tags help classify the type of assets that are in the catalog.

  2. Select the Data Quality hierarchy tab.

The asset is tagged to contain Excellent data quality, which is why we could narrow down the search results when we filtered by tags.

  3. Select the Sales hierarchy tab.

This asset is also tagged to contain global and regional sales data, exactly what we are looking for.

Impact and Lineage Analysis

The Impact and Lineage Analysis diagram helps us understand where the Sales Analytic Model’s data comes from, and what impact it has when changed.

We can view the lineage of the data asset back to its underlying source data, and any relationships between this data asset and others in the catalog.

  1. Select the Open Impact and Lineage Analysis.

  2. The diagram represents the flow of our sales data …

… from A) Source Tables, B) Fact View, C) Analytic Model and D) Visualization in a SAP Analytics Cloud Story.

Next we will explore the Open Impact and Lineage Analysis diagrams for the Analytic Model.

  1. Toggle both the Lineage and Impact analysis buttons to Off.

  2. Select the Lineage toggle.

The Lineage diagram displays the lineage to the left of the analyzed object.

  3. Deselect Lineage toggle and select the Impact toggle instead.

The Impact Diagram displays the objects that depend on the selected asset (Analytic Model) and what will be impacted by any changes that are made to it.

The layout of the diagram can also be changed.

  • Left-Right - [default] Display lineage objects on the left, and impacts on the right of the analyzed object.
  • Bottom-Top - Display lineage objects below, and impacts above the analyzed object.
  1. Toggle both the Lineage and Impact Analysis buttons to On, then select the Bottom-Top layout option.

  2. Close the Open Impact and Lineage Analysis diagram again.

Congratulations! You have successfully navigated and searched for an asset in the SAP Datasphere Catalog.
