In this course, we have already examined how to manage medical incidents and how to work with players to ensure a successful recovery and completion of the return-to-play process. However, the highest priority remains preventing injuries before they occur. For this reason, the goal of this unit is to ensure that players remain physically and mentally healthy, resilient, and less susceptible to future injuries. Prevention is not only about avoiding setbacks but also about creating a sustainable environment that supports long-term performance, well-being, and player availability.
To assess whether a player is truly healthy and ready to perform at an optimal level, the medical staff require access to comprehensive and reliable information. This includes three key components.
- Medical Information
Comprehensive medical information forms the foundation of effective player health management. This includes, for example, pre-existing injuries, vaccinations, allergies, medications, and physical limitations. Having this information readily available allows the medical staff to assess risks accurately and make informed decisions regarding training, competition, and return-to-play.
- Players Performance Data
Performance data is derived from tracking providers and diagnostic testing. It includes, for example, analyzing workloads or medical diagnostic values. These data points provide measurable, unbiased insights into a player’s physical condition, recovery status, and readiness to perform, supporting data-driven decisions in training and injury prevention.
- Subjective Player Feedback
Subjective player feedback provides critical insight into how players feel physically and mentally. Information about pain levels, fatigue, stress, and overall well-being often reveals early warning signs before they become visible in clinical assessments. This perspective enables proactive intervention and supports individualized health and performance management.
Bringing these perspectives together creates a holistic, 360-degree view of a player’s health status, which is essential for informed decision-making. In the following sections, we will demonstrate how the capabilities available in SAP Sports One support this comprehensive view. Maintaining optimal player health requires close collaboration between the target groups relevant for medical and health.
