For decades, Enterprise Architects have worked with familiar architectural "tools," such as applications, interfaces, data models, and infrastructure. SAP AI introduces entirely new materials into that toolkit: intelligent, reasoning components such as Joule, Joule Agents, and embedded AI services. These are not simply enhancements to existing processes; they enable new, efficient ways of designing workflows through the enterprise.
Think of this as moving from traditional construction materials to modern composites and smart building systems—structures are still grounded in solid foundations, but they can now be more adaptable, efficient, and responsive. Just as new construction materials transform the types of buildings that can be constructed and managed, AI changes the types of business architectures that are conceivable. With this, Enterprise Architects must shift from optimizing today’s landscapes to intentionally crafting tomorrow’s AI-enabled capabilities, agent interactions, and data products that will be core elements of the enterprise design.
Enterprise Architects are Critical for SAP AI
Enterprise Architects reside at the crossroads of business objectives, process transformation, and technology strategy, where the impact of SAP AI becomes reality. This unique position allows them to ensure that AI initiatives remain aligned with enterprise priorities rather than becoming isolated technical experiments. EAs translate SAP’s integrated vision of applications, data, and AI into architectures tailored to their organization’s landscape, helping narrow value gaps, reduce complexities, and unlock new ways of working. Without EA oversight, AI would remain a disconnected experiment. With EA guidance, SAP AI becomes embedded into end-to-end journeys, such as SAP Order-to-Cash, Hire-to-Retire, and Design-to-Operate, ensuring that intelligence flows consistently across applications, data products, and agent interactions. EAs also play a critical role in aligning SAP RISE, SAP GROW, SAP Business AI Platform, and SAP AI so their organization can innovate directly within SAP rather than building disconnected solutions around it.
The Joule Family: From Intent to Action
Before exploring these responsibilities, it helps to share a common vocabulary. SAP describes a clear family of Joule capabilities that work together to turn a person’s intent into a completed business action:
Joule is the engagement layer across SAP. Through Joule Work—the intent-based workspace—people state what they want to accomplish in natural language rather than navigating individual applications.
Joule Assistants are the role- and process-aware "smart teammates" that interpret a person’s intent and coordinate the right Joule Agents to get work done within and across functions.
Joule Agents are purpose-built AI agents that carry out well-defined, multi-step business tasks. They are accessible through Assistants and Joule Work and can also be system-triggered.
Skills are the atomic, deterministic actions that agents use to do the work—retrieving data, running a calculation, or triggering a transaction—and are connected to SAP and third-party systems through governed MCP and A2A patterns.
For Enterprise Architects, this vocabulary matters: it clarifies what to govern (agents and their skills), what to design for (assistants and their coordination), and what shapes adoption (the Joule Work experience).

Enterprise Architect Responsibilities in the Era of Agentic AI (SAP Specific)
Strategy & Alignment
In an AI-first landscape, Enterprise Architects help their organizations move from an approach of "we should do something with AI" to a stronger position of "here is how SAP AI advances our strategy." They connect board priorities, such as financial resilience, operational efficiency, and workforce productivity, to AI value themes and role-based assistants powered by Joule. They guide their organizations toward understanding AI not as a side project, but as a core enabler of business outcomes, explaining how agents and intelligent capabilities become integral to the enterprise architecture.
Positioning Joule
Positioning Joule—specifically Joule Work, the intent-based workspace where people state what they want to accomplish rather than navigate individual applications—as the new engagement layer helps EAs illustrate how AI becomes the entry point for work across future SAP landscapes. This is the experience layer of the Autonomous Enterprise: a human-led, AI-enabled way of operating in which people set direction and agents handle routine coordination and execution within governed guardrails.
Architecture and Scalable AI Deployment
Enterprise Architects design future landscapes where SAP applications and the SAP Business AI Platform operate as one system. The previously separate AI Foundation, SAP Business Data Cloud, SAP Business AI Platform, and Business Transformation Management converged into a single SAP Business AI Platform, organized around three pillars—Build (Joule Studio and SAP Integration Suite), Contextualize & Reason (SAP Knowledge Graph, SAP Business Data Cloud, and SAP and non-SAP models accessed through the Generative AI Hub), and Govern (SAP AI Agent Hub, the SAP-managed agentic runtime, identity and security, and value realization)—with Joule as the engagement layer above them. This requires defining how Joule Work, Joule Assistants, and Joule Agents interact across the landscape, including extensions, non-SAP components, and custom agents built in Joule Studio.
EAs also ensure the foundations are managed in one location for scalable agent deployment: a clean core, consistent process logic, identity and authentication architecture, and an intentional UX strategy. With these elements aligned, AI agents can operate safely, consistently, and predictably across transactional processes.

Discovery and Governance
A strategic EA responsibility is helping organizations recognize the meaningful impact SAP AI can have. EAs help connect business challenges and process bottlenecks to specific AI capabilities and AI agents, rather than running isolated pilots. Tools like SAP LeanIX and SAP Signavio support structured discovery by mapping capabilities, applications, processes, and data dependencies, making it easier to visualize where AI can be effectively applied. As agents move into production, the SAP AI Agent Hub—the command center in the Govern pillar of the SAP Business AI Platform—provides centralized oversight of every agent, Large Language Models, and MCP server across the full lifecycle, from plan and build through discover and provision, secure and govern, observe and analyze, and optimize and decommission.
EAs also establish early governance: ownership, roles, and architectural guardrails. This sets up functional and technical teams—Activation Services, Data Architects, Custom AI Engineering, and Business Process Experts—to safely build, deploy, and scale agentic solutions.
Data and Context
EAs ensure that AI is built on solid data foundations. SAP Business Data Cloud, SAP Knowledge Graph, and domain-specific data products provide the semantic understanding that Joule and agents rely on. EAs clarify which data sources matter, where governance is required, and how zero-copy architecture patterns and lineage support trust and transparency. They bring data architects early into the design process to ensure AI can operate with the correct context across processes and applications.
Value Realization and Lifecycle
AI adoption is not a standalone transformation. Enterprise Architects anchor AI initiatives inside broader transformation programs—RISE with SAP, SAP S/4HANA transitions, and Lines of Business transformations. They identify reference use cases and reusable agent patterns that scale across the enterprise, ensuring business owners remain engaged for measurable outcomes. As AI capabilities mature, EAs refine the architecture, evolve patterns, and support the continuous realization of value.
Lesson Summary
SAP AI fundamentally expands the Enterprise Architect’s role from system design to shaping AI-enabled capabilities, agent-driven processes, and scalable architectures. By understanding how Joule, agents, data foundations, and governance intersect, you can guide your organization from isolated AI ideas to strategically aligned, governed solutions. You are now equipped to position Enterprise Architects as critical drivers of AI strategy, architecture, governance, and long-term value realization.
