Managing Dangerous Goods

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to manage Dangerous and Non-Dangerous Goods.

Dangerous Goods Management Process

Dangerous Goods for a Product

Ensuring the compliance of products is the main objective of product compliance. Since most regulations or legal obligations relate to the chemical level of the product, the unpackaged product is the focus in product compliance. This is different in particular for dangerous goods assessments. Here, the packagings and packaged quantities of the product must comply with the dangerous goods regulations.

Dangerous Goods Management in SAP Product Compliance ensures comprehensive regulatory adherence for hazardous materials throughout the supply chain.

The system assesses unpackaged and packaged dangerous goods, classifies them according to dangerous goods regulations, and determines whether transportation is allowed, allowed with restrictions, or forbidden.

This integrated approach provides classification data for checks in business documents such as stock transfer orders, sales orders, and delivery notes, with automatic blocking when transport is forbidden or assessment is incomplete.

Be aware of the following:

  • As seen in previous scope items, the dangerous goods assessmen happens not for the product itself. It takes place on the chemical level, represented by the unpackaged product.

  • The unpackaged product reflects the deepest level. Here the substances or the analytical compositions are defined.

  • As the next level you take care on the packaged product, and at the hightest level you use the product.

  • Several products were created and labeled as compliant relevant. These products are used for the logistic integration, but the dangerous goods assessment does not happen there.

The following video shows how these users work together to assess a dangerous good.

Applicable Process Steps

To sum up, the general process steps are:

  • Master Data Specialist: Sets the compliance indicator inside a product
  • Product Steward Specialist: Assigns materials and packaged products to an unpackaged product
  • Dangerous Goods Specialist: Classifies (un-) packaged products
  • Dangerous Goods Specialist: Allows / forbids transportation
  • Dangerous Goods Specialist: Sets rules for Dangerous Goods checks in Sales and Delivery

Benefits

The Dangerous Goods for Product chain helps you to:

  • Integrate the dangerous goods assessment of a product with the process of creating and changing products
  • Integrate the dangerous goods assessment of a product with your logistic processes
  • Use compliance requirements out-of-the-box for dangerous goods regulations in different countries or regions for certain modes of transport
  • Manage the impact of changing and evolving dangerous goods regulatory requirements on how and where your products can be transported

Note

This process flow is covered in Scope Item: 3FC- Classify a product as (Non-) Dangerous Goods.

How to Assess Dangerous Goods

Introduction: Dangerous Goods

When a product is intended to be transported, the Product Stewardship Specialist assigns compliance purposes to the product. These compliance purposes specify the dangerous goods regulations that are relevant for the transport of the product.

If the product is a dangerous good, is has to be classified according to the applicable dangerous goods regulations. It must be determined whether the transport of this product is allowed in a certain country/region by the certain mode of transport.

During the classification process, the system generates the dangerous goods description with rules that are specified in each dangerous goods regulation.

Task 1: Manage Basic Compliance Data for a Dangerous Good

Dangerous Goods Specialist for Product Compliance, Jasmine classifies an unpackaged product according to the assigned regulations and allows the transport for all the regulations.
