Explaining Permit to Work (7Z4)

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to explain Permit to Work in Maintenance Management

Permit to Work

Overview of Permit to Work

The Permit to Work (PTW) process is a formal system used in various asset industries to ensure that high-risk jobs (such as hot work, confined space entry, electrical isolation, work at height, and so on) are performed safely and in compliance with regulations. It acts as an authorization tool that ensures work is conducted under controlled conditions and facilitates collaboration between maintenance, operations and safety departments.

Permit to Work solution is used to control and monitor the safety measures in an industrial environment and ensure the reliability of your technical systems. It also connects the various teams involved in the work activity and acts as a means of communication between everyone involved, starting from the planning of the activity until normal operations are restored.

Implementation Considerations

The Permit to Work solution is recommended for industries that are involved in the following kind of activities:

  • Industries where maintenance activities involve high-risk or hazardous tasks

  • Industries where operational activities are likely to expose the operating personnel to certain risks

  • Industries where specific safety regulations apply. These regulations include laws that involve the maintenance of industrial health, company policies, and safety standards around the hazardous goods.

When the existing system does not minimize the risks or if it is unable to meet the rules and regulations, the Permit to Work solution can be implemented to effectively manage the risks and create a safe system of work.

Business Benefits

  • Ensure all high-risk work complies with legal and company safety standards

  • Prevent accidents by enforcing hazard identification and control measures

  • Document approvals, work performed, and conditions for accountability and traceability

  • Provide records for audits, investigations, and regulatory checks through a digital PTW system

  • Standardize processes to reduce delays, miscommunication, and unsafe shortcuts.

Key Process Flow

  • Trigger maintenance order that requires a permit
  • Identify type of permit (for example, hot work, confined space)
  • Create permit in the system
  • Record work scope, hazards, and control measures.
  • Review permit and validate precautionary measures by an authorized person
  • Issue permit to the technician before starting the job
  • Perform work under the safety conditions outlined in the permit.
  • Inspect site after job completion and close permit in the system.
