Evaluating the Different Working Modes in SAP Build Process Automation

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to choose the appropriate way to implement a process requirement by evaluating the three different working modes in SAP Build Process Automation

SAP Build Process Automation Working Modes

As a person that wants to create process in SAP Build Process Automation, you can choose from a set of different working modes:

  1. Import prebuilt processes and automations from the built-in Store.
  2. Build custom processes and automations from scratch using the Process Builder tool.
  3. Reuse workflows from SAP Workflow Management – either as a migration effort or when SAP Build Process Automation capabilities don't fulfill all your needs.
  4. Reuse automation projects from SAP Intelligent Robotic Process Automation – existing SAP Intelligent Robotic Process Automation Cloud Studio projects are fully compatible with SAP Build Process Automation.
  5. "Hybrid" mode combining pre-packaged process and workflow content.

Import of Prebuilt Processes and Automations From the Built-In Store

With this option, you can make use of a wide variety of prebuilt, directly usable packages that are made available via the built-in Store. The packages span across lines of business, industries, and shared functions. The package content ranges from business processes to templated automations, from form templates to process visibility projects, as well as actions, also called skills. Also, there are complete packages containing all of the different artifacts. These packages are mostly ready to plug and play, only requiring minimal configuration efforts. The amount of content is continuously being extended.

Build of Custom Processes and Automations from Scratch Using the Process Builder Tool

The Process Builder is the central tool for you as a (citizen) developer to create your own process and automation artifacts. Its capabilities allow you to implement almost any business scenario in a no-code approach. The Process Builder supports the creation and use of:

  • Forms and approval forms
  • Automations (bots)
  • Decisions (business rules)
  • Actions (also called skills)
  • Controls
  • Workflows developed in SAP Business Application Studio.

Reuse of Workflows from SAP Workflow Management

If you were using SAP Workflow Management before your move to SAP Build Process Automation, you might have existing workflow investments that you would like to reuse. SAP Build Process Automation allows to integrate these workflows into your processes. Additionally, you can still create new workflows in SAP Business Application Studio, that you deploy to the SAP Build Process Automation workflow runtime. This might be useful when you're implementing complex processes, where the no-code Process Builder of SAP Build Process Automation doesn't provide all the required capabilities, or when you're used to building your workflows in SAP Business Application Studio, and don't want to fully migrate to the Process Builder yet.

Reuse of Automation Projects from SAP Intelligent Robotic Process Automation

If you were using SAP Intelligent Robotic Process Automation before your move to SAP Build Process Automation, you might have existing automation investments that you would like to reuse. You can export your automation projects from SAP Intelligent Robotic Process Automation, and import them into SAP Build Process Automation. As SAP Build Process Automation offers the same artifacts and tooling as the SAP Intelligent Robotic Process Automation Cloud Studio, you can now manage and adjust your project artifacts in SAP Build Process Automation.

"Hybrid" Mode Combining Prebuilt, Process, and Workflow Content

As SAP Build Process Automation offers a lot of flexibility, you can also combine the artifacts of the before mentioned working modes, when you've custom requirements or you just want to, for example, extend your existing workflow from SAP Workflow Management with additional steps in an SAP Build Process Automation process. You could, for example, create a process that calls a workflow developed in SAP Business Application Studio first, and then runs an automation that you've imported either from the Store or from a package that a colleague of you developed.
