Choosing the Approach in the UI

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to choose the approach in the UI.

Choosing the Approach in the UI

To enable the downtime-optimized approach in the Software Update Manager UI, the main dialog is the selection of the Scenario Strategy.

  1. On the first dialog, as usual you specify the stack.xml file.
  2. The second dialog on Scenario Strategy offers the downtime-optimized conversion approach, under the choice Downtime-optimized.
  3. The next important dialog then asks for the respective password to utilize downtime-optimized conversion. The password can be obtained from SAP using support ticket.
  4. Another dialog asks for the customer transport buffer file which is required for downtime-optimized conversion.
  5. In case of a database migration, additional options are available.

We focus only the dialogs specific to downtime-optimized conversion. In the previous figure this was the Scenario Strategy, the Authentication of Scenario, and the table list for downtime-optimized DMO (if required). Another dialog is relevant as well: the dialog Inclusion of customer transport buffer file, specifying the customer buffer that holds the FIN customizing. It is shown a second time in Roadmap Step Configuration in phase SUMASK_CUSTOMER_BUFFER.

Note

On the previous figure dialog part (2), you see Uptime Migration as another option. This option is only available for the migration case. If no migration is required, the option would be nZDM instead (see figure "Software Update Manager Scenario Strategies" in lesson "Deciding on the Approach"). This is relevant for dialog part (5) as well. The table list specification is only relevant for a migration case.

Authentication of Downtime-Optimized Approach

The approach downtime-optimized conversion requires an educated consultant, that is one person who completed this training and gained the SAP Knowledge Badge. The badge is issued by SAP SE and provided by Credly (log-on required) and needs to be accepted and made public. A support ticket needs to be created in which the public link to the Knowledge Badge is provided. IN this ticket SAP will provide a password that is required for executing downtime-optimized conversion. Make sure to request the password with a sufficient lead time.

Example of a SAP support ticket to Request Password

  • Component: BC-UPG-TLS-TLA
  • Title: "Password request for downtime-optimized conversion"
  • Dear support, we request the password for the downtime-optimized conversion approach. John Doe has taken the ADM329 training and successfully passed the SAP Knowledge Badge assessment, and is supporting the project.
  • System-ID: DEV
  • Software Update Manager-version: Software Update Manager 2.0 SP 23
  • Customer company name: "Conversions unlimited"
  • Partner company name: "Consulting Experts"
  • Link to SAP Knowledge Badge: https://www.credly.com/badges/...
  • Thank you and kind regards, Peter Pan

Approach Specific Dialogs in Roadmap Steps Extraction, Configuration, and Checks:

  1. Scenario Strategy: select approach.
  2. Authentication of Scenario: provide password.
  3. Inclusion of customer transport buffer file: provide Customer Transport Buffer file which includes at least the FIN customizing transport from standard conversion.
  4. Migration Parameters: provide table list file for uptime migration (DMO case).
  5. Required Configuration Parameters: Software Update Manager sets higher default values than for standard (R3load and ABAP processes will have to be checked anyhow).
  6. (Further approach specific dialogs are shown in Roadmap step Preprocessing).

Choose the Approach

In this exercise, you will learn how to enable the downtime-optimized approach in the Software Update Manager UI.
