Setting Ambitions and Targets

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to set ambitions and targets.

The Definition of Ambitions

Ambitions are long-term sustainability goals that an organization wants to achieve (for example multi-year net-zero emission ambition)You can use the Our Ambitions app to monitor the status of your organization's ambitions, drill down into your data, and add, edit, delete, and group ambitions. The features help you track the progress of your sustainability goals and make data-driven decisions to improve your sustainability performance over time.

Before an ambition can be created for a metric, ambitions must first be enabled for that metric in the Performance Tracking section of the Manage Metrics app.

You can also cluster ambitions using Ambition Groups.

This screenshot shows Performance Tracking using Manage Metrics app.

Follow these steps to add a new ambition.

  1. Open Our Ambitions in the Analytics and Steering group from the SAP Fiori launchpad.
  2. Select Add Ambition to add a new ambition. You can also edit an ambition when you select the edit icon. Hint: to be able to add an ambition, you first need to set the Ambitions settings in the Manage Metrics application to active. Only then, you can select the metric in the Our Ambitions app.
  3. Fill the details for the following fields: "Related Sustainability Metric", "Expected Year of Achieving Ambition", "Ambition Group", "Ambition Description", "Ambition Target", and "External Dashboard".
  4. Once done, choose Add Ambition to save the new ambition.

The new ambition is shown in the Our Ambitions app, see example below:

This screenshot shows the steps to add a new ambition.

You will find a summary of the ambition you have created and can check if it is on track or off track. The current performance can also be tracked in detail by clicking on "Drill Down". Here, the ambition is broken down along the organizational structure you have initially set up and that is used for the respective metric. It means that you can check, for example, for a specific business location or country whether the ambition was reached or not and how it deviates from the actuals. In the trend analysis you can graphically compare the ambition line (static line representing the long-term ambition) with the actuals and targets you have uploaded over time.

You can also link an ambition to an external dashboard, initiative or other information source providing additional information on the program/initiative.

The Creation of Targets

Compared to ambitions, targets are rather short-term objectives (annual quarterly or monthly)

Targets are uploaded on metric level and are uploaded in the Manage Quantitative ESG Data application. In the Manage Metrics app you can define for each of your metrics the target direction. This can be either an increase or decrease of a value. For example, if you seek to increase the amount of community investments, actuals exceeding your uploaded target mean that you have met and then surpassed your goal. By contrast, if you seek to decrease CO2e emissions, actuals exceeding your uploaded target mean that you have not yet fully achieved your objective and are currently off track.

Once the target data is uploaded and published it will be visible in the "Analyze ESG Data" app and the "Our Ambitions" app. This allows you to measure the performance of your organization by comparing actuals to the targets you have uploaded for a particular metric.

The following video shows how to create targets and ambitions.
