Exploring How SAP Joule Assistants Orchestrate Finance Workflow

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to describe the role and capabilities of AI assistants in an autonomous finance environment

The Role of a Joule Assistant

With a clear picture of why Autonomous Finance matters, Selina now needs to understand what it is made of. She quickly discovers that Joule is not a single tool, but a layered system: role-aligned assistants that understand your context and coordinate the work, and specialized agents that execute it autonomously behind the scenes.

Grasping this distinction — who does the coordinating, and who does the executing — is essential for Selina as she prepares to explain SAP's AI capabilities to RaiLona's finance leadership team.

Getting to Know AI Assistants

Joule Assistants are the layer that sits between you and the agents working behind the scenes. They interpret your intent, understand your context, and coordinate everything needed to get the outcome you are after.

Joule Assistants are role-aligned AI systems that act as expert teammates. Each assistant is designed around a specific business role or function. It understands the context of that role: the workflows you run, the decisions you make, the data you depend on, and the agents that can act on your behalf.

When you express intent, the assistant interprets it in the context of your role, determines which Joule Agents are needed, coordinates their execution, and surfaces the result. You interact with one assistant. Behind it, multiple agents may work in parallel or in sequence across different systems and domains.

This is what makes Joule Assistants fundamentally different from a general-purpose AI. A generic AI gives you an answer. A Joule Assistant gets the work done.

How Joule Assistants Work

Assistants use deep role and process context to coordinate agents. When you describe a task or ask a question, the assistant does not just interpret your words. It understands who you are, what your role is responsible for, and what your organization's data and processes look like. It uses that context to decide which agents to invoke, in what sequence, and with what parameters.

Assistants are embedded within their respective autonomous domains. They draw on the SAP Knowledge Graph and SAP Business Data Cloud to ground every action in accurate, current business data. When results are ready, they surface back to you in Joule Work, in the Space or conversation where you started, with full traceability of what was done.

They are part of the Joule experience layer, included with your SAP subscription. The Joule Agents that each assistant coordinates are what carry the commercial cost, within the Premium AI capabilities packages.

Assistants in Autonomous Finance

A layered portfolio map of SAP Autonomous Finance, showing how assistants connect to the finance capability areas of Revenue Management, Treasury & Working Capital, Tax & Trade, Accounting & Close, Financial Planning & Analysis, and Governance, Risk & Compliance, which are supported by the SAP Business AI Platform to enable an AI-driven future business model.

Autonomous Finance combines Joule Assistants and Joule Agents to support key finance processes by addressing key pain points across finance domains.

Assistants are the teammates. Assistants are aligned to roles and processes, so they understand the context they’re working in. Assistants coordinate agents for a specific role, to get the job done. They provide user-facing interaction layers, enabling users to query, guide, and intervene in agent-driven processes through natural language and contextual interfaces.

Agents are the doers. Agents reliably perform specific multi-step tasks across SAP and third-party systems equipped with specialized skills and tools.

A framework linking key finance pain points across six domains to AI-driven business value levers, powered by Autonomous Finance assistants – Billing Assistant and Sales Operations Assistant for Revenue Management, Cash & Treasury Assistant and AP Assistant for Treasury and Working Capital, Tax & Compliance Assistant for Tax and Trade, FIN Close Assistant and Consolidation Assistant for Accounting and Close, FIN Planning Assistant for Financial Planning and Analysis, and Governance Assistant for Risk and Compliance. Each assistant delivers measurable improvements in productivity, speed, and quality, such as billing uplift, faster cash cycles, automated e-invoicing, quicker close cycles, more time for analyses, and improved audit accuracy.

Assistants and agents operate on top of existing application logic and process models. They do not replace transactional systems but extend them by automating coordination across steps, for example, triggering actions during financial close.
