Understanding the Concept of Business Functions

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to explain the concept of business functions.

Concept of Business Functions

The Major Technical Steps
Evaluate Business Functions

For evaluation purposes ("Does the Business Function add value?"), you shouldn't use the development system until you're sure about realization at a later point in time.

It's recommended that you use a sandbox system. Keep in mind that, in general, activation of a business function can't be revoked.

You can only transport the complete business-function system switch settings across the system landscape.

SAP System Landscape Aspects

You must ensure that your development system can support your production line with emergency corrections or phased development go-lives during and after activating new business functions. To ensure this, add a temporary copy of the development system.

Based on your risk profile, you should consider appropriate measures.

Ensure dual maintenance.

Activation and Configuration

Benefits:

  • Transparency of all SAP system and UI changes that take place.

  • Stability for all other parts of the solution.

  • New coding becomes active only where activated.

  • Faster implementation because only activated parts are configured.

The switch transaction shows all the business functions that can now be activated after the installation of the new software components.

In the switch framework transaction, you can do the following:

  • View the list of business functions available with the latest system setup.

  • Access documentation, release notes, test catalog, and possible dependencies.

  • Install the relevant documentation; refer to SAP Note 1066110.

Before activation, you get transparency of all system and UI changes that take place.

Afterwards, you can activate the chosen business functions and perform the configuration tasks.

By doing that, the new coding becomes effective. All other parts of the system remain stable.

A reversible business function can be tested or evaluated in DEV or QAS systems but only in separate clients.

During the test of reversible business functions, no other tests take place in the whole SAP system, as business functions are active in all clients.

To completely undo a business function, the whole client has to be deleted.

Activation

Switch Framework: Transactions

SFW5 – activate/deactivate business functions.

SFW_BROWSER – investigate which enhancements are related to the business function in question.

SFW1 – create switches (only customer enhancements).

SFW2 – create business functions (only customer enhancements).

SFW3 – create business-function sets for industry solutions (only customer enhancements).
