Mapping Skills and Competencies to Job Roles

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to map skills and competencies to job roles.

Job Specific Competency Management

Skills and competencies mapped to a job role are job-specific. This mapping allows these attributes to populate the attribute sections in the Career Worksheet without having to add them manually. The system will determine which attributes should be pulled into the forms according to which job-specific ones are mapped to the employee's Job Role.

In an instance with Job Profile Builder (JPB) enabled, skills and competencies are mapped in Manage Job Profile Content.

Mapping skills and competencies are similar, however, there are some differences to consider:

  • Behaviors cannot be mapped to skills, only competencies.
  • Skills use proficiency levels from the Proficiency Rating Scale set in Manage Talent Intelligence Hub to determine expected ratings.
  • Weights cannot be configured for skills.
The image shows an example of mapped skills for the HR Business Partner role. Two of the skills have a family-level proficiency, whereas the other skills can have a proficiency level specific to this job role only.
The Map Competencies button is highlighted on the 3 Mapped Competencies tab.

Attributes (Competencies and Skills) can be searched by typing the name or using the Tags. When selecting multiple tags, the results will be filtered to show only those competencies or skills that have all the tags assigned.

Image shows an example to search for competencies using a specific tag. Selecting 3 of these competencies to add to the Job role.

When mapping competencies, a weight and an expected rating can be set which would determine how important each competency is to the role vs the other competencies mapped to the role, as well as which should be the ideal rating that shows the ability required for the Job Role. Expected ratings can be displayed in Performance and 360 Reviews forms, and they play a key role on the Career Worksheet when evaluating the role readiness. Weights are not typically used in competencies.

In this image, a calculation of the expected rating is shown. Based on the lowest/highest/expected score, the system will compute to a Calculated Expected Rating % which will indicate what is expected for the Job Role.

Family Skills and Competencies Mapping

In addition to the Job-Specific mappings of Competencies and Skills at the job role level, it is also possible to map these attributes at the Family level. In this case, all the job roles within the family will be assigned the content and every role will have the same expected proficiency level (if defined).

This example shows mapping of Skills for the Human Resources family, which would apply to all the job roles, with the same expected Proficiency Level.

Caution

Mapping at the Family level is not typically recommended, since it has some important limitations:

Summary

  • Job-specific skills and competencies automatically populate the Career Worksheet, based on the employee's job role mapping.
  • Skills and competencies are mapped in Manage Job Profile Content, with differences in mapping behaviors and proficiency levels.
  • Competencies can have weights and expected ratings, influencing role importance and readiness evaluation.
  • Family-level mapping applies attributes to all job roles within a family but has limitations, such as manual addition in reviews.
