Glossary of Learning Terms

TermNotes
LibraryControls what items, programs, and curricula users can search and self-assign. It also controls what classes are available to users for self-registration.
CollectionList of external links, programs, and/or online items that may be created and recommended by administrators or users.
CurriculumA set of one or more items that can be assigned and tracked as a group. Curriculum assignments check the learning history to determine if the items should be placed on the learning plan. A curriculum is the only way to track retraining or to assign the choice of items or hours known as a Curriculum Requirement. When all the effective curriculum requirements have been completed, the curriculum status will show Complete.
FacilityPhysical place where a class is being delivered. Often a building or a campus.
ItemAn assignable unit that may be tracked. The smallest unit of training may appear separately on the learning plan when assigned or in the learning history when completed. Different items may represent courses, document links, on-the-job training, web-based training, exams, quizzes, etc.

Item Classification:

Instructor-Led, Online (WBT, doc, exam), Instructor-Led with Online Content, Other/Task List

Instructor-Led items may be scheduled and represent virtual or in-person delivery.

Online items are asynchronous and are usually self-paced without a facilitator.

Instructor-Led with Online Content includes online content (formerly known as Blended) and Instructor-Led time slots.

Other items may be anything else that needs to be assigned and tracked but is not scheduled and does not include online content. A Task Checklist item is an example.

Learning AssignmentItems, Programs, and Curricula can be assigned to users by administrators, managers, or self-assigned.
History RecordUser attempts to complete an item. Attempts may be successful (grants credit) or unsuccessful (leaves the item on the user learning plan).
Learning HistoryItems that have been successfully completed or unsuccessful attempts. Completion status provides details to indicate whether the user received credit or not.
Learning PlanList of items and related activities (e.g., surveys, programs, and curriculum requirements) currently assigned to the user.
LocationThe classroom, lab, or other physical setting in which a class is delivered. This can be mobile or can be associated with a facility.
PrerequisiteItems and/or Curricula the user must complete before he can self-register for a class, request observation for a task checklist, or launch an online item.
ProgramA list of activities that will be tracked as a group. It may be one of three types: Open-Ended, Duration-Based, or Scheduled. Users may be assigned programs, or they may self-assign them from their library. Activities may be items, links, text, or HTML. Specific classes may be added only to the Scheduled type of Program.

Registration/Enrollment

Associating a user with a class. Registration status can be enrolled, waitlisted, canceled, or pending (awaiting approval).
Required DateThe due date of an assigned item.
Curriculum RequirementA choice of items or types of hours the user must complete. Assigned as part of a curriculum. The user is presented with the number of items/hours and possibly a pool of items from which they may choose.
Retraining IntervalThe number of days before a user must successfully complete an item again.
ClassesAn occurrence of an item on the calendar. It presents the opportunity for a user to attend the delivery of an instructor-led item. Must be set up with a start date and time. Administrators can assign resources (one or more instructors, a facility or building, a location/classroom, etc.).
Time SlotsA portion of time within a day. For an item to be scheduled, it must have at least one time slot. The time slots may contain resources such as locations and instructors. Although attendance may be tracked at the time slot level for a class, only the completion of the entire class will show as a history record.
Sub CurriculumA curriculum that becomes part of a parent curriculum and may be assigned separately as well as assigned and tracked together with the parent.
CategoryCategories that are associated with items and curricula. They are helpful for users browsing the library.
SubstituteAn item that provides credit for another item. Successfully passing the substitute may mark the original item complete. Failing the substitute may mark the original item as failed (unsuccessfully completed).
Survey/EvaluationAutomatic assignment of a survey to collect user feedback immediately after training or a follow-up survey that gives a user and/or manager a chance to provide feedback on the training effectiveness after a period of time.
User ReportsUsers can run reports on data such as learning history, learning needs (items currently on the learning plan), and curriculum status.
