Creating the v12 Matrix Grid Report

Objectives

After completing this lesson, you will be able to:
  • Explain v12 Matrix Grid Reports.
  • Configure v12 Matrix Grid Reports.
  • Describe Potential.
  • Define the purpose of How vs. What Matrix.

Matrix Grid v12 Reports

The Matrix Grid Reports give planners a two-dimensional view of employees by placing them in a matrix with each axis defined. You can customize the look of the Matrix Grid Reports, such as the colors and icons used.

There are two Matrix Grid Reports available: Performance-Potential and the How vs. What Matrix (Objective-Competency).

This screenshot shows an example of the Performance-Potential Matrix Grid report in v12 format.

The Matrix Grid Reports are interactive and allow the user to focus on certain blocks by clicking on the report. You can quickly zoom in on employees and compare data with additional access to the Succession Talent Card.

This screenshot shows one employee Succession Talent Card in the Performance-Potential Matrix Grid report.

Usability features:

  • Extensive default filter options
  • Navigation to Matrix Grids opens pages within the existing hierarchical menu of Succession
  • Show details per user with Talent Cards
  • No limit to the number of employees displayed per cell
  • Performance Trend (Matrix Grid Placement History) information

There are different options to filter data in the matrix:

  • Choose the Review Period.
  • Choose from the filter options for the Target Population: Team View, Succession Management and Matrix Permissions, or Group.
  • Choose Generate to show the Matrix Grid UI.

Planners can select filters to pinpoint exactly the groups and the time range for the group they are interested in evaluating. You can adjust the filter values by reopening the filter area and then choosing the Update button to refresh the matrix grid.

This screenshot shows the different options to filter data in the Matrix Grid with v12 UI.

Matrix Grid v12 Reports Configuration

The most common matrix report is the Performance-Potential Matrix, where performance assessments are mapped with estimates of future potential.

Custom trend data can also be used instead of performance on the x-axis and potential on the y-axis. Discuss this with your consultant if you intend to use the two available custom options.

Matrix Grid Rating Scales determine the number of blocks on the report (for example, if the performance rating scale is 3 points and the potential rating scale is 3 points, your matrix report will be a traditional 9-Box).

This screenshot shows a 9-box version of the Performance-Potential Matrix Grid report, which can be customized.

Understanding Potential

Potential estimates a person’s ability to move beyond a current role. The factors that might go into assessing potential could be behaviors such as a willingness to learn and grow, to challenge the status quo, and to take on new challenges.

Potential within a company shows a commitment to the company's vision and mission. These qualities indicate how a person might step into a new position. Potential is plotted based on the Matrix Grid Rating Scale set in the Matrix Grid Report model.

One important note about the Matrix Grid Report: the data displayed in the Succession tool is stored in blocks within the Profile for Potential ratings or other trend ratings.

This screenshot shows Potential ratings from the Profile used for the Performance-Potential report.

How vs. What Matrix Report

Another matrix available that is less commonly used is the How vs. What Matrix. This matrix helps assess an employee’s ability to meet objectives while assessing various competencies. It is helpful for organizations that use Management By Objectives and Competency evaluation.

These matrices are often referred to as a 9-Box because the default matrix is a three-by-three table; however, SAP SuccessFactors is configurable, and this matrix may differ based on your configuration needs and rating scales.
