Activating Joule for a Line-of-Business (LoB) solution is not a repetition of platform setup.
While Joule is provisioned centrally, its behavior is defined locally by the business system it operates in.
SAP SuccessFactors is one of the first SAP solutions to support Joule and serves as a reference scenario for understanding how Joule:
- Integrates with a SaaS application
- Uses identity and authorizations at runtime
- Executes navigational and transactional interactions in a real business context
How Joule Fits into the SAP SuccessFactors Landscape
Joule is embedded within the SAP SuccessFactors user interface.
Although it appears native to SAP SuccessFactors, Joule itself runs as a service on SAP BTP.
From an architectural perspective:
- SAP SuccessFactors remains the system of record for HR data and processes.
- Joule acts as an interaction and orchestration layer, interpreting user intent and invoking SAP SuccessFactors capabilities.
- All data access and actions executed by Joule are governed by existing SAP SuccessFactors authorizations.
This separation ensures that Joule enhances usability without bypassing SAP security or business logic.

- Automate portions of the setup through SAP BTP tooling
- Serve as SAP’s recommended operational guide for activation
