Updating an SAP Solution Manager Java System using SUM

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to update an SAP Solution Manager Java System using SUM

Updating an SAP Solution Manager Java System using SUM

Before updating an AS Java-based SAP system using SUM, you should consider the following steps:

  1. Consider updating the database software to the most current patch level - ESPECIALLY, when you installed your SAP system using rather old RDBMS media and did not update the database software since then.
  2. Check free space within the database data volumes and on file system level.
  3. Read the relevant SUM Master Guide and check the SAP Notes mentioned therein that are relevant for your planned update process.
Check SAP Host Agent
Extract SUM Archive, Configure SAP Host Agent, and Start SUM UI
SUM for AS Java-based SAP Systems Welcome Screen
Provide Credentials for OS User
Provide Stack XML File
Confirm Target SAP System Release
Provide Credentials for SAP System Administrator
Confirm Components which won’t be Updated
Show Validation Result and Replace Encryption
Show SAP System Parameters
Begin of Downtime
SUM Procedure is Running
End of SUM Technical Downtime
Summary and Evaluation
End Procedure

Check the software components and their respective SAP Support Package levels.

You have successfully updated your SAP Solution Manager Java system!

Note

Please note, that the end of the technical update procedure is not sufficient to start productive work again. Further checks are required before end users can return to productive use. See SUM guide and major SUM notes from https://support.sap.com/sltoolset for details. These steps will not be performed in this course.

Update an SAP Solution Manager Java System using SUM

Business Example

You want to update an SAP Solution Manager Java system with SAP Max DB on Windows using SUM.

You will update your newly installed SAP Solution Manager Java system SMJ as described in this exercise, using the input values/selections, given below.

You will use SUM to import SAP Support Packages into your SAP system SMJ.

Note

Please note: for the installation activities on Windows, in this training, we will be using the classical CMD-Shell, NOT the Windows PowerShell. To start the CMD shell: Open the directory you would like to work in using the Windows File Explorer. Then type cmd into the address bar of the Windows File Explorer. This will open the CMD shell for the selected directory.

Prerequisites

Please follow the update procedure as described in this exercise.

Steps

  1. Make sure, that the SAP system SMA is started and running without problems, because SAP system SMJ depends on a running SAP system SMA.

  2. Make sure, that the SAP system SMJ is started and running without problems.

  3. Via Remote Desktop Connection, log on to smxhost with user smjadm.

    Note

It is important to log on with user smjadm – not with user smaadm or user install. Maybe you have to open a new Remote Desktop Connection. For license reasons, not more than two Remote Desktop Connections are possible in parallel. So it could be, that you have to log off of one Remote Desktop Connection in order to open a new one.
  4. Open a Windows explorer and check the free space on directory D:. There should be enough free disk space available.

  5. The files to be imported by SUM were calculated by MP, already. They were downloaded to D:\Media\Update_SMJ\02_MP_Download. This folder can be used as download directory. But one file is missing there: copy the stack XML, provided by MP, to the download directory.

Use the Windows Explorer to copy the file MP_Stack_1002005668_20240531_.xml from D:\Media\Update_SMJ\03_MP_Stack_XML to D:\Media\Update_SMJ\02_MP_Download

    Note

This step is essential: The stack XML file needs to exist in the same directory in which the update media reside. When obtaining the update files and the stack XML file from the Maintenance Planner, they will be usually located (after download) in two different places.
  6. Open a command prompt at D:\usr\sap\SMJ.

  7. Extract the SUM archive, delivered by the Maintenance Planner, to this directory:

    sapcar -xf D:\Media\Update_SMJ\02_MP_Download\SUM11SP03_1-80006853.SAR

A folder D:\usr\sap\SMJ\SUM is created and about 25.000 files are extracted from the archive.

  8. Configure SAP Host Agent for SUM:

Open a command prompt at D:\usr\sap\SMJ\SUM

    Call STARTUP.BAT confighostagent SMJ

The URL for starting SUM Java in a browser is displayed: https://wdflbmt0910:1129/lmsl/sumjava/SMJ/index.html

  9. On the WTS, open a browser, for example Google Chrome

  10. Copy the URL presented by SUM into the browser: https://wdflbmt0910:1129/lmsl/sumjava/SMJ/index.html.

    Note

Please note that the first access to the SUM UI will take several minutes before the UI shows in the browser. Even when the browser asks for leaving the seemingly unresponsive page, don't do so.
  11. Log on to the SUM UI with user smjadm.

  12. Now start the SUM:

If not stated differently, always choose Next to continue. There will be screens that require just choosing Next.
