The system landscapes used for an SAP S/4HANA Cloud implementation include:

SAP Cloud Identity Services

The SAP Cloud Identity Services tenants are the first systems provisioned for a customer. SAP Cloud Identity Services runs on the SAP Business Technology Platform and consists of two separate tenants, Identity Authentication and Identity Provisioning. SAP Cloud Identity is the default identity provider for SAP S/4HANA Cloud, and provides secure authentication and single sign-on for users in the cloud.

SAP Central Business Configuration

SAP Central Business Configuration (CBC) is a separate tenant that lives in SAP Business Technology Platform where you provision your SAP S/4HANA Cloud systems (Starter, Quality, and Production), activate the business scope, and complete configuration-related activities. Configurations are moved from CBC to SAP S/4HANA Cloud through transports. CBC is used by customers after go-live to continue to maintain their SAP S/4HANA Cloud solution by activating new scope, countries, and making configurations.

Starter System

The Starter System includes the Enterprise Management scope and comes with preconfigured business processes and master data. The data and configuration in the starter system directly aligns with the scope item test scripts in SAP Best Practices Explorer. Implementation consultants use the starter system to demonstrate SAP Best Practice processes to customer experts in Fit-to-Standard workshops. During the workshops, the business scope that was identified in the Digital Discovery Assessment is confirmed, configuration data is gathered, and customization decisions are made. After consultants move onto configuring the Quality and Production systems, the Starter system can be decommissioned.

Quality System

The Quality system provisioned and configured via CBC based on the data and requirements gathered during the Fit-to-Standard workshops. The implementation team should transport configurations to the quality system in weekly or bi-weekly sprints, followed by thorough testing of configured processes. Extensions, such as creating custom fields, are done with the relevant extensibility Fiori apps in the S/4HANA Cloud quality system. After thorough testing, extensions can be transported from quality to production using the Software Collection transport Fiori apps in S/4HANA Cloud. Other activities, such as setting up business roles and assigning permissions, setting up integrations, and migrating data are done directly in the SAP S/4HANA Cloud quality system, but cannot be transported and must be done again in the relevant Fiori apps in the production system.

Production System

The Production system is provisioned via CBC and kept in sync with the Quality system via weekly or bi-weekly transports. After configurations have been made in CBC, transported to quality and tested thoroughly, the configurations can be released to the production system via CBC. Certain configurations cannot be made in CBC and must be done directly in the production system. The guided workflow tasks in CBC instruct the implementation team members when to make these configurations in the production system. After go-live, the production system is used by end users to run the organization's business processes.

Test Data Refresh Service

Ideally, the Quality and Production systems are mirror images of one another so business process testing or extension testing in the quality system accurately reflects what would occur in the production system (e.g. if a new extension is transported to production). However, the transport path only moves in a single direction from quality to production.

The Test Data Refresh service was developed to solve this problem and provide an ideal testing environment by syncing data in the production system with the quality system. Test Data Refresh is a subscription service that refreshes master and transaction data in the quality system from the production system. A built-in depersonalization feature ensures data privacy compliance.

Private Cloud System Landscapes

Deploy a Fully-Activated Appliance via SAP Cloud Appliance Library

Customers can use the SAP Cloud Appliance Library (CAL) to deploy a trial system to explore SAP S/4HANA Cloud, private edition functionality. An appliance is a compressed system image that can be rapidly extracted into a regular system instance by preserving everything that has been configured in the appliance when it was developed.

The trial is a prepackaged software bundle that contains an SAP S/4HANA system with preconfigured SAP Best Practices and an extensive demo guide that walks you through sample scenarios with pre-defined users and data sets. Because the SAP S/4HANA Cloud, private edition deployment has the same functional scope as SAP S/4HANA On Premise, you can use the trial system titled SAP S/4HANA and choose the most recent release.

The trial can be set up quickly as your personal instance with administrative rights with two deployment options:

  • Hosted in the cloud by an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) provider
    • Trial is free for 30 days, but there will be a hosting charge from the third party IaaS provider. Providers include: Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, and Amazon Web Services. Average cost is 3-4 USD per system uptime hour.
    • Time estimate to deploy: 1-2 hours
  • On your own on premise hardware
    • You will order a blue-ray disc from SAP and install on your own server.
    • Your on premise hardware must have a supported Linux release installed.
    • Time estimate: approximately 2-3 days
The installation of an appliance differs from a "regular" SAP installation, so we recommend having an experienced SAP partner or SAP consulting deploy the system. If customers choose to install the appliance on their own, you will receive support from SAP. Sandbox Systems for Fit-to-Standard Workshops

There are many fully-activated appliance systems available on the SAP Cloud Appliance Library. The SAP S/4HANA Fully Activated Appliance and the Enterprise Management Layer for SAP S/4HANA are particularly suitable for customers to get an experience of SAP S/4HANA Cloud, private edition. The concept behind these appliances is to provide a ready-to-run solution that helps customers experience the system for trial or scoping purposes, or enables implementation consultants to easily demonstrate business processes in SAP S/4HANA for sandbox purposes. 

Enterprise Management Layer for SAP S/4HANA

  • Based on the SAP Best Practices Enterprise Management Layer package
  • Specifically marketed for SAP S/4HANA Cloud, private edition
  • Configuration: Pre-configured, localized core template based on SAP Best Practices on premise country versions covering 43 countries.
  • Demo Guide: Standard SAP Best Practices documentation can be used with the EML (test scripts, process flows, accelerators)

SAP S/4HANA Fully Activated Appliance

  • Based on the SAP Best Practices for SAP S/4HANA On Premise package
  • Configuration: Pre-activated SAP Best Practices for SAP S/4HANA core functions, and additional scenarios for Service, Master Data Governance (MDG), Transportation Mgmt., Portfolio Mgmt., HCM, Analytics, and more.
  • Demo Guide: Extensive library of prebuilt demo scenarios with sample data sets (examples)

Implementation Landscapes for RISE with SAP S/4HANA Cloud, private edition

The implementation landscapes for SAP S/4HANA Cloud, private edition include: Sandbox, Development, Quality, and Production Systems.

Sandbox (SBX)

In new implementations, the SBX is used by implementation consultants to deliver Fit-to-Standard workshops to customer experts with the purpose of gathering configuration and customization requirement data. In a system conversion, the focus is on existing processes, SAP S/4HANA Simplification Items (captured in the SAP Readiness Assessment), reviewing new functionality and whether their current Workflow, Report, Interface, Conversion, Enhancement, and Forms (WRICEF) can be eliminated by adoption SAP Best Practices. A fully-activated appliance can easily be deployed via the SAP Cloud Appliance Library for the sandbox.

  • System Conversion
    • The customer's existing SBX is converted to SAP S/4HANA Cloud, private edition.
  • New Implementation
    • Option 1: Deploy the Enterprise Management Layer for SAP S/4HANA or selected SAP Best Practices content based on LoB or industry-specific scope. After activation of the SAP Best Practices solution, you can either extend or create your own configuration in the implementation guide (transaction SPRO).
      If you extend the SAP Best Practices with the implementation guide, the automatic content upgrade to the next release is not possible via solution builder.
    • Option 2: Deploy a system without SAP Best Practices and carry out customizing activities with transaction SPRO.
      If you do not start with any SAP Best Practices content, your solution will not be compatible with SAP Best Practices content delivered in future release upgrades.

Development (DEV)

The DEV system is used for development of customizations and extensions. Once a suitable extension is developed, it is transported to the quality system for thorough testing. After successful testing, the extension is transported to production.

  • System Conversion
    • The customer's existing DEV is converted SAP S/4HANA Cloud, private edition based on the migration approach validated with the SBX.
  • New Implementation
    • It may be possible to reuse the SBX as the DEV. Alternatively, a fresh DEV can be deployed with or without SAP Best Practices content. Further customizing can then take place.

Quality (QAS)

The QAS is used for thorough testing before anything is transported to production. This may include business process enhancements after an upgrade is implemented, or extensions created in DEV that have been transported to the QAS.

  • System Conversion
    • The customer's existing QAS is converted to SAP S/4HANA Cloud, private edition based on the migration approach validated in the SBX and DEV systems.
  • New Implementation
    • The configuration from the DEV system is transported to the QAS.

Production (PRD)

The PRD system is used day-to-day to run the customer's business activities.

  • System Conversion
    • The customer's existing PRD system is converted to SAP S/4HANA Cloud, private edition based on the migration approach validated in the SBX, DEV, and QAS systems.
  • New Implementation
    • The configuration from the QAS system is transported to PRD.
Depending on a customer's needs, additional systems may be deployed for specific activities (e.g. training, pre-production).

Partner Test & Demonstration Landscape

This system is a subscription-based test and demo environment targeted to implementation partner consultants. Partners can use this system to demonstrate and sell the solution to customers. If you purchase a subscription to this tenant, you will also gain access to additional SAP Learning Rooms in SAP Learning Hub through the Enterprise Support Learning Hub subscription.

This tenant is specialized for use only when completing the SAP S/4HANA Cloud training courses. Each system corresponds to a specific training course on SAP Learning Hub, and the system is prepared to work with that course's exercises. Because each system is specific to a training course on SAP Learning Hub, a subscription to SAP Learning Hub and an additional fee for the system is required.

Stay Current Enablement Sandbox

This system is a free playground landscape to explore SAP S/4HANA Cloud (public only) functionality and new scope items from the latest release. Basic company and master data is preloaded, but the system is not prepared for use with the SAP S/4HANA Cloud training courses on SAP Learning Hub. You can try using the system for this purpose, but you may need to complete some additional steps, such as creating additional master data, for an exercise to work. Users request access to the system for a one-week booking at a time via SAP Learning Hub and the SAP S/4HANA Cloud Implementation Learning Room.
