The New Analytic Model

Analytic Models are the analytical foundation to make data ready for consumption in SAP Analytic Cloud. It allows users to create and define multidimensional and multi-fact models to serve data for analytical purposes to answer different business questions. Predefined measures, hierarchies, filters, parameters and associations will provide a flexible and easy to use navigation through the underlying data.

Values and Benefits of the Analytic Model

  • More analytical capabilities and calculations to answer more and complex business questions.
  • Maximized re-use of source object reduces the effort and the number of objects to maintain.
  • Better control of output due to model and hierarchy pruning will optimize performance.
  • Optimized integration of existing SAP BW artefacts to secure existing investments.
  • Analytical Preview foster model quality.
  • Supporting data democratization and self-service analytics strategies as business oriented user can easily create models.

The analytic model is now the object for building stories in SAP Analytics Cloud.

The analytic model will replace analytical dataset which are exposed for consumption. Analytical datasets will continue to exist, but you should now use the analytic model instead.

Analytic model offers more calculations and greater functionality. You can prune what you want to expose in your object, thus avoiding unnecessary calculations and in turn achieving better performance. It also offers calculated measures and restricted measures, and an analytical preview.

Analytical datasets will still be available, but new features will only be developed for the analytic model. You can easily create an analytic model on top of analytical datasets.

A number of terms and concepts are used differently in the analytic model:

  • The "input parameter" in analytical datasets is known as a "variable" in analytic models. This is because we also talk about variables in the story in SAP Analytics Cloud. Because the analytic model is the object for consumption, and is therefore related to the story, the terminology of the story is used.

  • "Variables" in the analytic model comprise what are known as "analytical parameters" and "parameters" in the analytical dataset.

  • "Attributes" in the analytical dataset are known as "dimensions" in the analytic model.

Migration of models and SAP Analytics Cloud stories is only required if you want to benefit from AM’s new features, but AM will be increasingly more attractive over time
