Use a Template for a Story

You can apply formatting to your story by using a template, which provides predefined layouts and placeholders for objects to help you build a story. When creating a new story, you can choose a template as a starting point. You can also apply a template to an existing story by clicking Layouts in the main toolbar.

There are three categories of templates to choose from, depending on the type of story you are trying to create:

  • Monitor - These layouts can help you create a story ideal for monitoring you data or create a boardroom monitor. The layouts combine tiles such as maps, content, and keyfigures.

  • Report - These layouts can help you create a story ideal for reporting. The layouts combine tiles such as charts, tables, and annotations.

  • Present - These layouts can help you create a story ideal for presentations. The layouts provide the formatting and elements necessary to create a slide deck.

You can also create your own templates simply by saving a story as a Template. Saving the story as a template removes all data and converts charts, tables, maps, input controls, and value driver trees into empty placeholders. All grid pages and custom formatting are removed.

Explore Your Data

You can start creating a story for your data by experimenting with filters and charts in the explorer.

Watch this video to learn how.

Some actions specific to tables in planning models are not supported in the explorer. For example, allocation, version management, and forecasting.

Note
You can also access Explorer from the Data view of a story. To use the Explorer, select Data Exploration from the Mode area of the toolbar.

Create a Story from a Template and Use Explorer

Based on your human resource data, you are wondering why the company has been paying the sales department significantly more than the other departments. To understand this better you need to analyze the financial data. However, before creating advanced visualizations, you want to get an understanding of what data is available to you.

Key Tasks

In this exercise, you will perform the following tasks:

  • Consume an existing responsive template for quick content creation.

  • Use placeholder widgets to create visualizations quickly.

  • Interact with explorer to create dynamic visualizations.

  • Copy and paste widgets from explorer to existing pages.

  • Place comments on a widget.
