Deployment and Infrastructure

SAP S/4HANA Cloud Deployment of Choice

SAP S/4HANA can be deployed in a public cloud or private cloud.

A Public Cloud deployment is recommended if a customer has the ability and mindset for a transformational project, low landscape complexity, and can start with a clean system.

The implementation will include:

  • A complete, modern, SaaS ERP solution with full public cloud benefits.
  • The fastest path to innovation and lowest total cost of ownership (TCO).
  • A clean Cloud ERP solution without converting old/legacy ERP processes and configurations.
  • To reimagine business processes and take advantage of standardized best practices.

A Private Cloud deployment is recommended if a customer has plans for a long-term evolutionary journey to the cloud with high landscape complexity including mostly fragmented, highly customized systems.

The implementation will include:

  • A rapid conversion of their existing SAP ERP/ECC environments to a modern, cloud-based architecture. A new implementation with a clean system is also possible.
  • Full SAP S/4HANA on premise scope and functionality as a subscription and lower TCO based on the cloud model.
  • Ability to safeguard prior investments including ECC customizations, configurations, and partner add-ons including SOLEXs and certified solutions.
  • SaaS landscape at your own pace with the ability to extend and enhance as required.
For large and very large customers with extremely specific system architecture requirements beyond the scope of SAP S/4HANA Cloud, private edition, there is an alternative solution: RISE with SAP S/4HANA Cloud, private edition, tailored option. SAP offers a tailored infrastructure, technical managed services, and the SAP S/4HANA software with one contract.

Infrastructure Provider of Choice

A cloud software a service (SaaS) solution requires infrastructure to host the solution. Infrastructure refers to the physical server(s) where your software is installed. A building with many rooms full of these servers is called a data center. SAP has its own data centers, and we partner with other companies that provide infrastructure services, who we call, hyperscalers.

Our hyperscaler providers include: Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Alibaba Cloud. When customers use an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) provider, they do not have to buy the physical hardware or employ in-house experts to maintain it. The classic "on premise" concept refers to a customer purchasing and owning their own servers on company property, and installing and maintaining their software in these servers.

For the public cloud deployment, SAP is the default infrastructure provider. This enables us to offer customers the lowest TCO with a complete, packaged SaaS offering.

For the private cloud deployment, customers can choose their preferred infrastructure provider from our hyperscaler providers, SAP, or in special cases, the customer's own data center. These special cases are reserved for customers in regulated industries, public sector, or in countries with data residency requirements.

Business Process Intelligence Starter Pack

SAP Process Insights Discovery Report

SAP Process Insights is part of the Business Process Intelligence portfolio. The solution supports customers in driving continuous improvement in their business processes with data-driven improvement recommendations. In addition, the integration with SAP Intelligent Robotic Process Automation provides automated monitoring capabilities after process corrections are implemented.

As part of the RISE with SAP package, customers can get a snapshot of SAP Process Insights with a free Process Discovery report. Process Discovery is the evolution of SAP Business Scenario Recommendations on Spotlight and uses a customer's actual SAP ERP system usage data to generate the reports. Process Discovery is designed to help customers understand their current business process performance, identify new functionalities from SAP S/4HANA, relevant SAP Fiori apps, and automation and intelligent technologies that support their business goals.

Digital Discovery Assessment

The Digital Discovery Assessment is used in the sales cycle to assess a customer's requirements and match them with the best SAP S/4HANA Cloud solution to fit their needs. This occurs in the Discover phase of the SAP Activate Methodology.

After the Digital Discovery Assessment has been completed, the Digital Discovery Assessment Report provides the following information:

  • Known integration and extension requirements
  • Localizations and legal entities
  • The percentage of business scenarios (scope items) selected in each functional business area
  • Individual business scenarios selected
  • Selection of priority and which implementation phase the business scenario will be rolled-out (optional)
  • Questions and notes raised by a customer regarding specific scenarios and the corresponding answers from the account team.
  • Additional business process-related requirements
  • Detailed project-related questions

SAP Signavio Process Manager & SAP Signavio Process Collaboration Hub

As part of the RISE with SAP package, customers have access to SAP Signavio Process Manager to design business processes based on SAP Best Practices, and SAP Signavio Process Collaboration Hub to provide transparency and connect with key stakeholders.

SAP Signavio Process Manager is a cloud-based software that helps you document, model and simulate business processes. With visibility into process inefficiencies, customers can understand how to increase the performance of the organization at scale.

SAP Signavio Process Collaboration Hub acts as a single source of truth, giving employees across your organization a transparent meeting point to combine their work and expertise.

BPMN (Business Process Modeling Notation) is the industry standard for visually defining the steps in a business process.

SAP Best Practices Explorer

SAP Best Practices Explorer provides clearly defined business processes with documentation based on SAP's many years of experience with business software and our customers. For public cloud, the business processes selected on the Digital Discovery Assessment are the processes that will be delivered in the new SAP S/4HANA Cloud system. For private cloud, these processes are a valuable input to help customers design their new system and are optional to activate.

SAP Readiness Check

The Readiness Check is technical migration tool for customers converting their existing SAP ERP on premise systems to SAP S/4HANA Cloud, private edition. The Readiness Check uses a customer's actual system data to perform a holistic system analysis and provide technical guidance on how to prepare for the move to SAP S/4HANA Cloud, private edition.

The Readiness Check provides the following information:

  • Sizing for the SAP HANA business data platform
  • Infrastructure requirements
  • Functional implications for the new solution
  • Custom code adaptation
  • Software prerequisites
  • Business process analysis
  • Data volume management
  • Add-on compatibility
  • Recommended SAP Fiori apps

Custom Code Migration

The Custom Code Migration app is a technical migration tool for customers converting their existing SAP ERP on premise systems to SAP S/4HANA Cloud, private edition. The Custom Code Migration app analyzes the custom code in a customer's system for compatibility with SAP S/4HANA. It also evaluates usage data to identify unused custom code, which can then be removed from a customer’s system during the conversion process to lower the memory footprint.

The Custom Code Migration app extracts the following metadata:

  • Usage of SAP objects in your custom code
  • Extensions, such as enhancements or database table appends, made to SAP objects
  • Modifications made to SAP objects.

Analyzing the custom code in your existing SAP on premise system is essential to preparing for a system conversion because the SAP S/4HANA business software and database has been re-architected and simplified, and many new capabilities have been developed. The Custom Code Migration app relies on the Simplification Database, which is a file that can be downloaded and imported to your evaluation system, to identify customer objects that refer to SAP objects that have been changed in the target system (SAP S/4HANA). The Custom Code Migration Worklist is generated from the analysis, and each worklist entry provides an SAP Note with information on what has been changed and how the custom code needs to be adapted to be compatible with SAP S/4HANA.

There are three methods of analyzing the custom code in your existing SAP ERP system:

  • Run the Custom Code Migration SAP Fiori app in the SAP Business Technology Platform ABAP Environment and set up an integration with the on premise SAP ERP system.
  • Install the Custom Code Migration SAP Fiori app in the on premise SAP ERP system.
  • Use the ABAP Test Cockpit to run SAP S/4HANA checks in the on premise SAP ERP system.


SAP Cloud ALM is a cloud-native application lifecycle management tool for cloud-centric customers. It provides extensive implementation and operations capabilities for cloud solutions with the two components of SAP Cloud ALM for Implementation and SAP Cloud ALM for Operations. SAP Cloud ALM is included in the SAP Enterprise Support, cloud editions support plan for both Public and Private Cloud deployments.

SAP Cloud ALM for Implementation provides a preconfigured implementation workspace based on the SAP Activate Methodology and SAP Best Practices to guide customers and partners through each step of implementation. Additional features include:

  • Fast onboarding of project Teams and Progress Monitoring of implementation activities
  • Project planning synchronized with SAP Cloud solutions release timelines
  • Manage Implementation Tasks - automatically generated and adapted to customer scope
  • Supports Fit-to-Standard workshops with convenient visualization of Business Models and Process Descriptions
  • Prepare and manage manual and automated tests
  • Integrated reporting capabilities

SAP Cloud ALM for Operations enables customers to monitor processes and be alerted to potential issues. This ensures smooth business operations without disruptions, and increases the business process execution quality and performance. SAP Cloud ALM allows customers to be proactive in addressing potential issues, and empowers them to more fully understand how their cloud solutions run. Core capabilities include:

SAP Launchpad Service & SAP Mobile Start App

The SAP Launchpad Service runs on the SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP), and is used to configure the apps that display in the new SAP Mobile Start app. SAP Mobile Start is a native mobile app, meaning it was developed specifically for mobile devices. Apps developed for mobile devices are optimized from a performance and visual perspective for displaying on smaller screens. With the Launchpad Service, you can configure the apps from your website-based Fiori Launchpad to be available in the Mobile Start app. This enables employees to access and receive notifications from their Fiori Launchpad not only on a desktop computer, but also on a mobile device.

The Launchpad Service can also be used to create a website-based Fiori Launchpad where content from different solutions is combined into one central home page. However, the Launchpad service is not the same as the central SAP Fiori Launchpad. The central Fiori Launchpad lives in the same software stack as the SAP HANA database and the core S/4HANA software.

  • Home page personalization.
  • Intuitive role-based navigation with flexible content structure.
  • Smooth app integration for different UI technologies and third-party Web apps.
  • Integration with central services for managing tasks, notifications, and single sign-on.
  • Extensible framework for customization and branding.
With the introduction of SAP Mobile Start app, the SAP Fiori Client app is planned to be removed from public app stores in Q1/2022. Read more in SAP Note 2992772.
