Product Overview

What is SAP Product Footprint Management?

SAP Product Footprint Management is a cloud application running on SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP), enabling calculation of product footprints periodically and at scale across the entire product life cycle, from cradle to grave. Those footprints provide companies insights regarding the environmental impact of their products for disclosure to business partners and for internal product and process optimization.

In the current release, SAP Product Footprint Management enables you to calculate footprints for purchased and manufactured products at scale. You can extract business data (such as master data and material movements information) from your SAP S/4HANA 2021 and SAP S/4HANA Cloud system and associate these to your emission factors. You can then run a mass calculation to generate footprints for your purchased products. These footprints represent the environmental and climate change impact of the products, for example, the greenhouse gas emissions measured in carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e).

SAP Product Footprint Management runs on SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) within the Cloud Foundry environment.

Use Cases

You can use the SAP Product Footprint Management solution to:

  • Import your master and business data from your source system, such as SAP S/4HANA Cloud (version 2108 and later) or SAP S/4HANA (version 2021 and later). SAP Product Footprint Management supports connectivity with these systems. If you have an older version of SAP S/4HANA or a different business system, you can replicate your master and business data with the available push APIs.
  • Choose specific plants and product groups for footprint calculations in a Calculation Template.

  • Import emission factors from your own sources or an external data source such as Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) databases.

  • Map your emission factors with the corresponding business data by editing the Calculation Settings in the Calculation Template.

  • Run a calculation or do a test run with the data you have.

  • View the results of your calculations by using the Monitor Footprints application.

Business Architecture

SAP Product Footprint Management is a cloud application that is built on the SAP Business Technology Platform. In the application, within the Footprint Calculation Template, you define the scope you want to consider – like the period, plants, or product groups.

Based on this scope, the Product Footprint Management (PFM) Extractor calls the Data Extractor in the Sustainability Integration Component in ABAP. This reuse component is included in SAP S/4HANA and pulls the relevant business data – like material movements – from your SAP S/4HANA Cloud or SAP S/4HANA system and sends the aggregated data back to PFM.

Besides the business data SAP Product Footprint Management pulls emission factors from external data providers like Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) databases. Those factors can be uploaded via templates. SAP provides pre-filled templates with data from Content Partners via the SAP Store.

Next, the business data is mapped to the relevant emission factors via pre-configured derivation rules and the respective product footprints are calculated. This calculation can be done monthly for all plant-material-product combinations. The footprint is stored in the Footprint Inventory, via the application the user can view and compare the results.

Via the Sustainability Integration Component, the Footprint Inventory is also connected back to your SAP S/4HANA Cloud and SAP S/4HANA system so that your business users can access the footprints directly in their end to end processes and applications.

You begin by replicating all your source data from SAP S/4HANA Cloud or SAP S/4HANA. You then import emission factors from own LCA or from a third-party provider into the solution. Next, you decide on the plants, product groups, and mappings you want for your calculations. Lastly, you gain an understanding of the calculated footprints by viewing the results.

Analyzing Footprint Results

To help analyze the calculated footprints results in detail, with the aim of reducing your organization's carbon exposure, an interface using the OData service has been provided to build analytics dashboards. This interface can be consumed by your own analytics application or can be used in SAP Analytics Cloud.

With the help of the OData service, you can evaluate the product footprint data in multiple dimensions, such as:

  • Analyze the footprint data of products purchased from suppliers and identify a sustainable supplier.

  • Analyze alternative material to reduce the carbon exposure.

You can build analytics dashboards by using the Odata API. This interface can be consumed by your own analytics application or can be used in SAP Analytics Cloud. It exposes the aggregated and line-item level footprint data based on the products, the suppliers and the plants in your organization’s unit.

SAP provides pre-configured content which consists of various dashboards to visualize and analyze the footprint calculation results in detail. You can drill down into different dimensions, fitting best to your business needs. This will help you in identifying those materials or suppliers that contribute most to your overall product footprint and enabling you to take corrective actions to reduce your carbon exposure.

SAP Product Footprint Management Analytics Package is available as part of the Line of Business Sustainability in all SAP Analytics Cloud instances on release 2022.02 or higher. It consists of the following views and dashboards:
