Emission Factors Management

One of the main challenges in calculating product footprints is finding and assigning the right emission factors for evaluating the environmental impact of business activities. SAP Product Footprint Management provides apps to import emissions factors from various sources and for mapping those factors to business data from connected ERP systems. In the app, you can import datasets from our partners directly, or you can download the template in MS Excel format and maintain it with your own LCA data, with data from any LCA content provider, or with data from your suppliers. You can search and view all the imported emission factor datasets and navigate through all the data that is available in your system. For every factor, you receive a detailed overview, making it easier for you to understand the specifics to be able to later map the right factor to your business data:

The solution’s emission factors management enables you to reuse results from existing product lifecycle assessment (LCA) initiatives without starting from scratch. In the Import Emission Factors app, datasets from own product LCA, as well as from external LCA content providers can be imported. LCA content providers offer scientifically based lifecycle inventory (LCI) datasets with evaluations about the environmental impact of thousands of products and materials. In SAP Product Footprint Management, the emission data needs to be stored in the SAP LCA format, and you can download the respective template as a Microsoft Excel file in the right format directly in the application.

For example, you can enter data for your raw material cocoa beans that you are sourcing from a supplier in Ghana from own calculations and add an emission factor of 13 kg CO2 equivalents. This value refers to 1kg of cocoa beans from Ghana. The environmental evaluation method is the IPCC 2013 GWP 100a. This value is then taken as input for the calculation and is matched to the business data via the mapping templates.
