In this lesson we are going to explore the Activation Monitoring Dashboard with various analytic graphics and key metrics showing the performance of your customer data activation per destination application and action configuration, and also analyze a single failed action payload containing detailed information about the error to understand what is causing it.
Monitoring Customer Data Activation

Whenever you want to troubleshoot failed customer data activation, or just check the performance and metrics of all outcoming customer data actions, you can leverage the Activation Monitoring Dashboard to analyze insights and know more on some key metrics.
Total Succeeded: how many customer data records were activated out of your business unit. This total includes not only the succeeded ones, but also the ones sent out the first time, and more than once.
Total Failed: records that failed activation. The cause for failure can be problems connecting and transferring the records to the external system (destination fail), or configuration of the destination application, and/or the action that processed it (CDP fail).
Total Retries: total number of retries after the first tentative was unsuccessful.
Total Discarded: the discarded records that did not fail but could not be exported from SAP Customer Data Platform due to configuration such as missing the required processing purposes.
Total Potential: total number of activations attempted by CX Flows regardless if they succeed or not. These are further split between profile and group potential activations.
Key Metric Over Time: It shows the total succeeded, failed, retries, and discarded key metrics over time. Use the date range selector to expand or narrow down the period that you want to visualize (up to 30 days in the past).
CX Flow Activations: show the totals specifically for CX Flow activations. They include Potential, Succeeded, Failed, and Discarded key metric totals.
Actions

The activation monitoring feature lists the key metrics separated per destination application and action configuration. You can see the same key metrics previously described such as Succeeded, Failed, Retries, Discarded, and Potential. Activation Type specifies if the activation was done by a CX Flow or an Audience. Last Failure metric tells when the last failure happened.
Examining the Activation Performance Metrics of the SAP Customer Data Platform Console
In this video, we will dive into the Activation Monitoring Dashboard and see key metrics of activation performance using the Actions Table.
Video Summary
- Launch the SAP Customer Data Platform Console and access Monitoring then the Activations tab to view activation data.
- Use Date Range filter to see past 30 days records and review Total Succeeded and Total Failed cards.
- View Retries and Discarded cards for details on retry attempts and configuration issues.
- Browse the Actions table reviewing metrics per application and select any action for a deeper dive into activation failures.
Action Message Details

The displayed form allows seeing the 20 last activation payload occurrences that generated an action failure, discarded, or attempted retries when you select the corresponding key metric cell in the actions table. Every single activation will have Call ID, Origin (CX Flow that originated it), and the Date Time it happened.
After choosing one of the occurrences in the table above, the system provides a detailed information about the call, including a description message (if available), next steps (tips on how to solve the issue, if available), and technical details, such as step in the activation process where the payload either failed or was discarded, Call ID, Workspace ID, Business Unit ID, Application ID, Event ID, Error ID, Error Code, Action ID, Action Log, Action Tag, Activation Type, Entity ID, Error, Is Retry, Journey ID, Journey Version, Response Code, Missing Purposes, Schema ID, Step ID, and View ID.
Troubleshooting a Payload Activation Issue in the SAP Customer Data Platform
In this video, we will explore the detailed information in one of the failed or discarded activation messages.
Video Summary
- Navigate to the Action Failures section in the SAP Customer Data Platform Console.
- Select an Action Failure to access detailed information about specific issues.
- Examine the individual activation records on the Action Message Details Page, which are grouped by error messages.
- Select a record to review the error message, metadata, and related Action Configuration.
- Review the Error Description and Activation Payload, identify the cause of the issue, and make necessary adjustments.
Lesson Summary
In this lesson, you learned how to monitor your customer data activation to understand its performance and troubleshoot possible destination application and action configuration issues and understand their causes in detail.
