Explaining the Manufacturing Data Layer of SAP DM Insights

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to have a basic understanding of how the manufacturing data layer in SAP DM Insights works.

The Manufacturing Data Layer

To analyze data in SAP Digital Manufacturing for Insights with embedded SAP Analytics Cloud (eSAC), it is extremely important to understand the data layer underneath.

It basically starts that SAP DM Insights seamlessly receives and refines production data from SAP Digital Manufacturing, optimizing it for analytical use. The enhanced data is stored as Manufacturing Data Objects (MDOs) in its own database, which requires no additional configuration.

These MDOs enable you to analyze your production data directly, without the need to build complex data models. The intricate relationships between MDOs are automatically managed in the background, making it easy to focus on gaining valuable insights.

But let´s look a little bit more in detail how the MDOs are aligned with the architecture of SAP DM Insights:

The architecture of SAP Digital Manufacturing for Insights (DMi) is thoughtfully designed to manage and process data for analytics with maximum efficiency. Let’s delve into the key components of DMi’s architecture and how they work together to deliver valuable insights into your manufacturing operations:

  • Manufacturing Data Layer: At the core of DMi’s architecture lies the Manufacturing Data Layer, which serves as a central repository for all production data. It is where Manufacturing Data Objects (MDOs) are stored, making data easily accessible to various applications, features, and external APIs.

  • Data Transformation: DMi automatically converts raw data from SAP Digital Manufacturing into MDOs that are optimized for analytics. This transformation ensures that your production data is well-structured and ready to be used in your analytics projects, saving time and effort.

  • Interconnected MDOs: The MDOs within DMi are interconnected, creating complex relationships between data objects. This interconnectedness simplifies the analysis of production data, helping you to uncover deeper insights and patterns more effortlessly.

  • Embedded SAP Analytics Cloud (eSAC): DMi integrates the powerful capabilities of Embedded SAC, offering a robust and intuitive analytics experience. This integration allows you to create custom dashboards and stories that bring your production data to life through visualizations.

  • External APIs: DMi supports access to MDOs via external OData APIs, enabling seamless integration with other systems and tools. This flexibility extends your analytics capabilities beyond the DMi environment, allowing you to integrate and analyze data from multiple sources.
