Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to create data types for nonconformances

Create Data Types For Nonconformances

Introduction

When a shop floor operator logs a nonconformance, the quality department might require additional information for further context and follow-up analysis. For instance, they need to know the component where the defect occurred and the number of defects of that type found for the material being processed.

Data Fields

To ensure that all necessary data is collected when the operator logs a nonconformance (NC), it is important to create the appropriate number of data fields. This can be done in the Manage Data Fields application, where you can define the required fields. The following data field types are available:

  • Text: Users can enter a short text (max. 162 characters) in the field.
  • Text Area: Users can enter a long text (max. 1024 characters) in the field.
  • Number: Users can enter numbers in the field.
  • Date: Users can enter dates in the field.
  • Checkbox: Users can select a checkbox.
  • List: Defines a list of values that can be selected during data collection. You can assign the List type to your custom fields.

Note

For more information about data fields, refer to the SAP Application Documentation.

Data Types

To record additional information when logging a specific NC code, you can assign a data type to the NC code. A data type can contain one or more data fields that you can create based on your business needs.

In the Manage Data Types application, you group the data fields and associate them with a nonconformance category data type. You also identify the data fields as required or optional.

Once you have defined the nonconformance data type, you can reference it in any NC code definition by using the Nonconformance Data Type field in the Manage Nonconformance Codes application. You can only assign one data type to an NC code. This informs the system that when the specific nonconformance code is logged, the shop floor user will be prompted to enter the values associated with the fields in the nonconformance data type.
