Creating Alternative Assessments

Objectives

After completing this lesson, you will be able to:
  • Associate Pre and Post exams to an Item
  • Configure Items for Adaptive Learning

Pre and Post Exams

The purpose of pre and post exams is to evaluate the knowledge of the user population before and immediately after training. If the training course is effective, there should be a noticeable increase in knowledge when the results of the two exams are compared.

While it is optional to link objectives to the questions, it is highly encouraged to do so when developing questions for pre and post exams that are part of a learning evaluation requirement.

Learning Evaluation Reports

Learning evaluation reports present results for each objective, providing a detailed analysis of which specific objectives improved. Gathering this information is essential when assessing the effectiveness of your courses, as it highlights areas where your training may need enhancement.

The report below illustrates the training effectiveness of items by comparing the average pre test and post test mean scores. Without clear objectives, one can observe an overall increase in knowledge from training but lacks a detailed analysis.

Associate a Pre and Post Exam to an Item

Before an exam assessment object can be selected as a pre-test or post-test, it must first be added to the item as content twice. This process takes place on the Online Content tab of the item. Once the assessment has been added twice, you can identify which assessment object serves as the pre-test and which one is the post-test from the Surveys tab of the item.

Steps

  1. Navigate to Learning AdministrationItems.

  2. Search for and open an item.

  3. Select the Survey tab.

  4. Navigate to Learning Evaluation: Mastery of Content.

  5. Choose the dropdown menu for Pre-Test and Post-Test.

  6. Select the exams.

  7. Choose Apply Changes.

Result

You have associated a pre-test or post-test exam to an item.

Survey tab is highlighted. From this screen add the pre and post exam.

Adaptive Learning

An online item can begin with an exam designed to assess the user's knowledge of specific learning objectives. Based on the results of this exam, the system will mark the content items as complete with progress indicators, represented by checkmarks, if the user achieves the required score for each associated objective. This allows the user to test out of the content, meaning they will not need to access the content items for the objectives they have successfully passed, as indicated by the checkmarks.

Checkmarks indicators next to course content items are highlighted to show completion.

There can be a final exam that users must pass in order to receive credit. This exam assesses the users on all learning objectives related to the content items. If a user does not achieve the required score for any objective on the exam, the checkmark next to the corresponding content item will be removed. In this situation, the user will need to review the content items for the objectives they did not pass.

Configure an Item for Adaptive Learning

Steps

  1. Ensure the objectives are linked to both a content object and to question library questions.

    Note

If you are planning on associating objectives to content objects, you must make these associations BEFORE adding the content objects to an item. Once a content object is part of an item, you may no longer add or edit the objectives associated to it.
  2. Create a new exam assessment.

  3. Add objectives of questions to the exam.

  4. Specify which specific questions should be included in the exam based on the three possible options: Always, Randomly, or Never.

  5. Configure the settings on the exam assessment including overall passing grade for the exam, and passing grade for each objective, and choose to set or clear the objective flags for passed or failed exams.

  6. Add the exam and the content objects to the online item.

  7. Select the cog icon and configure the settings.

  8. Save your changes.

  9. Assign the item to a user from the Menu drop-down.

  10. Log in as the user and navigate to HomeLearning.

  11. Start the course with the assessment. If you answer all questions correctly, a check mark will be automatically displayed next to the corresponding content objects.

You have configured an item for Adaptive Learning.
