Exploring Assessments

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to differentiate between Exam and Quiz Assessments

Assessments Overview

Assessments can be included in both Online items and Instructor-Led Items with Online Content. These assessments can take the form of exams or quizzes, which learners complete following the learning activity. Exam assessments feature questions in multiple-choice, multiple-selection, or true/false formats and can be made mandatory to ensure successful completion of the learning activity.

After completing the assessment, user scores are recorded. Users can choose to review only the questions they answered incorrectly or opt to see all questions. Once users exit the exam, their scores are accessible only to administrators, unless a custom report is created to allow others to view them.

An exam assessment can also be printed so that students can complete the exam on paper. Multiple iterations of the exam may be distributed to the students so that students sitting near each other may not have the exact same exam. Once the exams have been completed, the Administrator can enter the scores, using the scoring interface.

Types of Assessments

Exams and quizzes are both commonly used assessment methods in education, but they serve different purposes.

An exam usually takes longer to complete and has a greater impact on a student’s overall grade. It typically covers all the material presented throughout the course. In contrast, quizzes focus on smaller sections of material, while exams provide a comprehensive evaluation of a student’s knowledge and understanding of the entire course.

A quiz is generally a short test that carries less weight in determining a student’s grade. Its main goal is to assess the student’s understanding of a smaller amount of material.

System Differences

There are several key system differences in how exams and quizzes are set up in Learning Administration.

  • Quizzes are straightforward and easy to build. When you create a quiz, you add questions directly onto it, and the questions cannot be reused for other quizzes.
  • Exams offer more options and functionalities to the administrator:
    • Questions from a Question Library can be added to an exam.
    • Questions can be built directly on the exam and are automatically added to the Question Library. This allows for reuse in multiple exams.
    • Questions can be organized into different security domains, ensuring that various Administrator roles only have access to the questions they are authorized to edit and add to exams.
    • The settings of an Exam Assessment provide additional functionalities such as creating a timed or proctored assessments.
    • Pre and post exam assessments can be created.
    • Learning Objectives can be associated to exam questions.
    • Exam Reports provide detailed analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of courses.
