Managing Certificates of Completion

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to customize certificate templates

Management of Certificates of Completion

Modifying certificates of completion for the Learning Management System (LMS) required access to customize reports using Report Designer (BIRT). An administrator role was granted the ability to export existing reports, which provided various formats for generating certificates. These reports were then edited using Report Designer, tested, and subsequently imported back into the LMS, making them available for users and administrators to print certificates.

While this method is still an option, the Certificate Template Editor is easier to use, making it the recommended alternative.

Pre-Configuration Requirements

Entities like Items and Programs can be configured to automatically link to a specific certificate of completion. The default certificate for a learning event can be set globally, determining which certificate is used. Alternatively, a custom certificate can be assigned to the individual learning entity itself.

To establish a global default certificate of completion, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to System AdministrationConfigurationGlobal Application Settings.
  2. Set the default values for: Default Certificate Template for Items and Default Certificate Template for Programs using the dropdown menus.

Create and Customize a Certificate Template

To create a certificate template, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to System AdministrationConfigurationCertificate of Completion Templates and select Add New.

  2. Enter a template ID.
  3. Enter a description for your new template.
  4. Select a locale.
  5. Determine whether this is for Items or Programs.
  6. Select the Orientation (either Landscape or Portrait).
  7. Select Add.

To customize the certificate template (such as adding an image of a logo to the top of a certificate), follow these steps:

  1. Scroll down and select the Add Image link. Make sure that you have sized your image and adjusted the colors so that it will print properly.
  2. Upload image to the Certificate Template Editor.
  3. Go to the HTML Markup section (body) and create an extra line below the <head> tag.
  4. Type <img src=""/>.
  5. Place your cursor between the double quotes, and then click once on the uploaded image in the bottom right.
  6. Save and preview the certificate. Make adjustments until you are satisfied.
The line added in the HTML markup section which is referencing the logo is highlighted.

Item, Class, or Program Association

To associate a certificate to your Item, Class, or Program, edit the entity and choose the desired Certificate of Completion Template from the dropdown in the Details entity tab. For Programs, Certificate Templates are associated in the settings tile.

Each Item or Class can have one Certificate Template, but you can have different templates for different classes of the same item.
