For an overview of Matrix Grid Reports, watch this video:
The Matrix Grid Reports offer insights across available talent and help you compare succession candidates from a target population like a team or department. Matrix Grid Reports are also called the "9-block" or "9-box" for the report has nine sections when using a 3-point rating scale on the x and y axis. However, for example, this can differ based on the Matrix Grid Ratings scales configured and tied to the report. For example, if the performance rating scale is 5 points and potential is 3 points, then the report would yield 15 boxes or blocks instead.

Two matrix reports are available:
- Performance-Potential: A matrix tool to plot employees on a graph based on performance reviews and manager’s judgment of potential; used to quickly identify high performing/high potentials for succession management purposes.
- Objective-Competency (How vs. What): A matrix tool to plot an employee’s competency rating relative to their objective rating in a matrix chart. This chart visually demonstrates the impact of an employee’s overall performance.
The matrix grids themselves are just reports so you can't take any action from the reports directly. However, once you identify your top talent, based on their placement in the grid, you can use the other features of SAP SuccessFactors Succession and Development to assign them to succession plans, add them to mentoring programs, and create development plans for them.
Based on how you've defined your reports, the system pulls ratings from various data sources across the SAP SuccessFactors HCM Suite. Most commonly, these ratings come from performance forms. You can configure these rating sources, including custom weighting, as well as defining other aspects of the report like which forms to include or whether to include in-progress or deleted forms. You can also adjust the report output by modifying cell background colors and labels or adding icons to represent certain talent field values. Customers often choose to display Talent Flags such as Impact of Loss, Risk of Loss, Minority, Gender, and others.
