Adjusting Delivery and Transportation Scheduling

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to maintain scheduling elements

Delivery and Transportation Scheduling

Based on your configuration, when you create a sales order, the system can calculate the following dates that are relevant for shipping:

  • Material availability date
  • Transportation planning date
  • Loading date
  • Goods issue date
The figure shows an example of backward scheduling starting from the requested delivery date and determining the availability date.

Delivery and transportation scheduling is done using the following timeframes:

  • Transit time

  • Loading time

  • Picking/packing time

  • Transport lead time

The system first performs backward scheduling in the sales order. The system checks if the required delivery date can be met. The required delivery date is the starting point for backward scheduling.

If this results in a date in the past, the system automatically performs forward scheduling to determine a new delivery date. The system also performs forward scheduling if the material is not available on the calculated material availability date. You can rerun forward scheduling when you create the outbound delivery. Forward scheduling also resolves the lag in an outbound process that occurs when the material availability date in the order is earlier than the date on which the outbound delivery is created. For each delivery type, you can specify whether rescheduling is required.

How the dates are calculated is a matter of configuration.

Define Scheduling By Sales Document Type

For each sales order document type, you can define whether delivery and transportation scheduling should be performed.

In your configuration environment, locate and select the Define Scheduling By Sales Document Type configuration activity.

The screenshot shows the Define Scheduling By Sales Document Type configuration activity. You can see, for example, that shipping scheduling is enabled for the sales order document type OR (Standard Order).

When you select Delivery SchedulingX (Shipping scheduling on), the system automatically determines the pick/pack time and load time for each schedule line in the sales order, depending on the configuration of the shipping point from which an item is shipped.

If you check the Transportation Scheduling box, the system determines the transportation lead time and the transit time for each schedule line in the sales order.

Delivery Scheduling: Loading and Picking/Packing Time Configuration

The loading time and the picking and packing time are maintained in the shipping point definition.

To maintain the loading time and picking/packing time, in your configuration environment, locate and select the Define Shipping Points.

The screenshot shows the Define Shipping Points configuration activity. You can see the scheduling configuration for shipping point 1010.

You can define the type of delivery scheduling for each shipping point. This means that for each shipping point, you can define whether and how pick/pack and/or loading times should be determined.

The above screenshot shows the scheduling configuration for shipping point 1010:

  • The loading time and the pick/pack times should be taken as maintained in the shipping point: the fields Determine Load. Time and Det. Pick/Pack Time have the value C (Default from shipping point).
  • The loading time (1 day) and the pick/pack time (3 days) are maintained in working days.
  • The working hours of the shipping point are not maintained (the Working Times field is empty), which means that the system performs daily scheduling.

Here are some additional options available to you:

  • You can opt for precise scheduling if you maintain the working times for the shipping point. The system can then schedule by hours.

The working times of a shipping point consist of a working calendar, which must match the factory calendar defined for the shipping point, and shift sequences. The shift sequence defines the shifts for each day of the week, and the shifts define the start and end times.

To maintain the working times, in your configuration environment, locate and select the Maintain Working Hours configuration activity.

  • If you want additional criteria to be taken into account when determining pick/pack and loading times, set the appropriate indicator in the respective Determine Load. Time and Det. Pick/Pack Time fields:

The screenshot shows the Define Shipping Points configuration activity. You can see the different options available for determining pick/pack and loading times.
    • A: route dependent. If you choose this option, you can maintain a pick/pack time for each combination of shipping point/weight group and route, and a loading time for each combination of shipping point/loading group and route.
    • B: route independent. If you choose this option, you can maintain a pick/pack time for each combination of shipping point and weight group, and a loading time for each combination of shipping point and loading group.

To maintain pick/pack and loading times depending on additional criteria, in your configuration environment, locate and select the Maintain Duration configuration activity.

Transportation Scheduling: Transit Time and Transportation lead Time Configuration

The transit time and the transportation lead time are maintained in the route definition.

To maintain transit time and transportation lead time, in your configuration environment, locate and select the Maintain Duration configuration activity. Then select Routes.

The screenshot shows the Maintain Duration configuration activity. You can see how to maintain the transit time and the transportation lead time depending on the route.
