Creating a Movement Type

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to create a custom movement type

Relevancy of this Configuration Task

This configuration task is relevant for the following Supply Chain solution process:

Core Inventory Management (BMC)

The following link: https://me.sap.com/processnavigator/globalSearch/BMC takes you to SAP Signavio Process Navigator, where you get information about the scenario (process flow, test script, etc.).

Significance of the Movement Type

During a fit-to-standard workshop on the Core Inventory Management (BMC) solution process, you explain and show your customer how to use the Manage Stock application, for example, to post a scrapping or goods issue from stock to a cost center.

This application is easy to use and self-explanatory. You simply choose the type of posting that you want to make and the system guides you.

Run the following demo to have a quick refresher on how to use the Manage Stock app.

This application is easy to use, however, it offers only a few options: scrapping, goods issue to cost center, and initial entry.

Your customer is interested in how to post an unplanned withdrawal for a production order or project, and perhaps how to withdraw goods from special stock. You present the Post Goods Movement application for this purpose. With this application, you can post all types of goods movements. In this application, you specify what you want to post by entering an operation, a reference if necessary, and a movement type.

For a quick refresher, have a look at the following short demo.

This refresher demo illustrates the importance of the movement type: It specifies what goods movement you are posting. At this point, you should be familiar with the main control functions of the movement type.

Reasons for Creating a Movement Type

Real-world example of a customer request: How to make a field mandatory?

Watch the video below to discover a real-life scenario that requires knowledge of movement types and the creation of a new custom movement type.

In the previous video, your customer asks how to make a field mandatory when posting a goods movement. How would you react? Explore the following answers and the feedback that is provided:

  • Answer 1: You identify a gap and propose a workaround.
  • Answer 2: You explain that the movement type controls field selection and suggest updating the standard movement type.
  • Answer 3: You explain that the movement type controls field selection and suggest creating a custom movement type.

Note

In the following videos, you will see different reactions and answers from the consultant and receive feedback. Only one answer is correct. For the incorrect or partially incorrect answers, we explain what mistakes you should not make.

Answer 1: You identify a gap and propose a workaround

In the previous video, we learned how important it is to have knowledge of configuration options so you don't miss opportunities to meet customer needs while staying within the standard.

Answer 2: You explain that the movement type controls field selection and suggest updating the standard movement type

We learned in the previous video that the movement type controls the field selection, but that it's not recommended to customize standard movement types.

Answer 3: You explain that the movement type controls field selection and suggest creating a custom movement type.

In the previous video, we learned that if you want to change the field selection for a goods movement, you should create a custom movement type.

Conclusion

The movement type controls the goods movements, in particular the field selection control. It is recommended not to change the standard movement types, but to create a new movement type if, for example, a field selection control needs to be adjusted.

Creation of a Movement Type

Now, that we've learned that we should create a new movement type, let's go to your configuration environment.

We assume that we have checked and that the mandatory field requested by the customer (Goods Recipient) can indeed be controlled by the movement type.

Run the following demo to learn how to create a new movement type with reference to movement type 201, as well as its reversal movement type.

When we create a new movement type, we should not forget to create the corresponding reversal movement type and link the two. In the following demo, see how to assign a reversal movement type to a movement type.

Now we have created a new movement type as a copy of the standard movement type 201. In the lesson Controlling Fields for Goods Movements, we make the Recipient a mandatory field for our custom movement type.
