Batch Definition and Batch Managed Material

Imagine you are conducting a fit-to-standard workshop on batch management. You begin by reviewing what a batch is for a product. A batch is a partial quantity of a material that is managed separately from other partial quantities of the same material. In various industries, especially in the process industry, you have to be able to work with homogenous partial quantities of a material or product across the entire logistics flow and value chain. Batch management is the identification of a quantity of material with a unique 10-digit alphanumeric code. The batch number assigned to a material quantity allows the material stock to be clearly sorted. General characteristic values, the chemical composition or product specifications at the time of production or procurement can optionally be stored in the batch master record. For batch managed materials, the batch number must be specified with each goods movement. So how do you determine whether a material should be batch managed or not? If a product is to be managed in batches, you must set the corresponding indicators in the product master record. You first set a Batch Management Required indicator that is globally valid for the product. Basically, this indicator means that the product can be managed in batches. Once you have set the general Batch Management Required indicator, you can set the plant specific indicator. This enables you to decide, for each plant, whether the material should be managed in batches or not. For example, a product may be subject to batch management in the production plant, and not in the distribution plant. It's fantastic that we can exclude batch management for a material in certain plants. However, I find it cumbersome to set the batch management indicator in the product master record for each plant. This is a very valid point. However, depending on the configuration settings, the plant-specific indicator is preset by default or left blank, and the default setting can be overwritten when creating a product master record. Let me show you the corresponding configuration activity. First, in your configuration environment, locate the Specify Batch Management Default per Plant configuration activity. Typically, production plants may require batch management handling, but distribution plants may not require batch management for any materials. For plants where batch management is required,  leave the No Batch Management indicator blank. For plants where batch management is not required, you can select the No Batch Management checkbox. Selecting No Batch Management can help you avoid repetitive tasks. The fields relevant to batch management are suppressed when you maintain the material master plant data for a batch managed material. If you change the no batch management setting for a plant, it only affects new material plant data created after this time. Existing material plant batch definitions in the plant  remain unchanged.
