Managing Balance Validation Groups

Objectives

After completing this lesson, you will be able to:
  • Create a Balance Validation Group and Assign Rules.
  • Activate/Deactivate a Business Validation Rule or Group.

Balance Validation Group Creation and Rule Assignment

Max now understands how to create Balance Validation rules and now has to assign Balance Validation Rules to Balance Validation Groups. This involves gathering multiple validation rules into one group. This validation group has a hierarchical structure so that in validation runs, data can be validated against a group of rules all at once. Balance Validation Groups can be created or edited in the Manage Balance Validation Rules and Groups application.

This application allows for several methods of managing and creating groups. You can:

  • Manually Add or Delete subnodes or rules
  • Import Nodes from other rule groups
  • Edit a group in a spreadsheet and upload the edited version into the system
  • Rearrange a rule or subnode just by dragging and dropping
  • Cut and paste a rule or subnode to change its location
  • Sort rules and subnodes by selecting a node and using the sort function

Note

Remember, you can only add active rules to a group.

Let’s try creating a group and assign some rules to that group.

Create a Balance Validation Rule Group and Assign Rules

You have created and activated rules in the system. In order to be able to execute the rules, they need to be assigned to a Balance Validation Group. It is important to note that a rule must be in active status in order to be added to the group and the group must be in active status to be able to be scheduled in a validation run. Create a Balance Validation Group with the ID BVRG### with the Description of Balance Validation Training Group ###. Add the two rules that you have previously created and some rules that have been created by other colleagues. Save the group but do not activate at this time.

Balance Validation Rules and Groups Statuses

Max has now created both Balance Validation Rules and Groups. The rules have been saved as a Draft version and cannot yet be assigned to a group. The groups have been saved as a Draft and cannot yet be included in any validation run. In order to use these groups, Max will need to change their status from Draft to Active.

A Balance Validation Rule can have one of the following statuses:

  • Draft –The rule is saved as a Draft version. It cannot be used in validation yet and can be deleted.
  • Active – The rule is saved as an active version. It can be assigned to a rule group for data validation. Active rules cannot be deleted.

Note

Once you activate a rule, editing it will create a draft. After making changes, be sure to save them so they are added to the draft. The rule will be indicated as Active, but with a Draft link beneath it. Clicking the Draft link allows further edits. Choosing Save and Activate will apply your draft changes to the base, active rule.

A Balance Validation Group can have one of the following statuses:

  • Draft –The group is saved as a Draft version. It cannot be used in validation yet and can be deleted.
  • Active –The group is saved as an active version. It can be selected and used when launching validation. An active group cannot be deleted unless you revert the status to Deactivate.
  • In Revision – When editing an active rule group, its status is changed to In Revision. An active version of this group still exists and can be used. When you activate the revised version, the prior active version will be overwritten.

Key Takeaways:

  • Balance Validation Groups allow you to gather multiple validation rules into one group, so that data can be validated against a group of rules all at once.
  • The Manage Balance Validation Rules and Groups application can be used to create, manage and edit Balance Validation Rules and Groups.

With this understanding of Balance Validation Rules and Groups statuses, let’s try activating some rules and groups.

Activate Balance Validation Rules and Groups

You have created a Balance Validation Group and now need to activate it so they can be executed and then the results analyzed. However, in a previous exercise, you noted that a rule you require in your group was inactive and could not be added. Activate this rule and add it to the group. When you created your group, This was saved in DRAFT status as it was not ready to be executed due to the missing rule. Now that the additional rule has been added, sort the sub-node in ascending order and activate the group so that it can be included in a Balance Validation run.
