In this video, we will explore the process of creating live data connections to on-premise data sources. Live data connections to on-premise data sources can be created by an SAP Analytics Cloud administrator in two ways, a direct live data connection or a tunnel live data connection. First, let's take a closer look at SAP Analytics Cloud direct live data connections to on-premise data sources. This connection type uses CORS. It must be installed, configured, and enabled on every single on-premise data source where a connection is required. For direct live data connections using CORS, a user's web browser connects with the on-premise data source. To explain the creation of direct live connections to an on-premise data source, we'll use SAP S/4HANA as an example of an on-premise data source. To create this connection, the SAP S/4HANA administrator must use CORS to configure the Information Access web service, ABAP. This enables cross-domain requests from web applications to reach servers on different domains. What this means is that if a user is consuming SAP Analytics Cloud stories that are based on live models with direct live data connections, then the SAP S/4HANA on-premise data source will send data directly to the user's web browser. If the ABAP web service Information Access is disabled or if CORS is reset on the SAP S/4HANA on-premise data source, then no live data can be sent. Direct live connections can use either basic authentication or SAML SSO authentication. To use SAML SSO, the SAML IdP administrator and the SAP S/4HANA administrator have to establish a trusted relationship between the system using certificates. This means that SAP Analytics Cloud users and SAP S/4HANA data source users will use the same IdP for user authentication. Some systems require a few additional or different steps when creating direct live data connections. In the example of a direct live connection to an SAP BusinessObjects platform, the system administrator must install and configure the SAP BusinessObjects Live Data Connect software, which we will explore later in this lesson. In the case where the client web browser is located outside of the customer network, it is necessary to secure live data access to the on-premise data source using either a tunnel connection or a reverse proxy. The reverse proxy uses SAP WebDispatcher to create a direct live connection and is discussed in detail later in the course. So, let's take a closer look at SAP Analytics Cloud tunnel live data connections to on-premise data sources using SAP HANA as an example. A tunnel live data connection is a secure connection between SAP Analytics Cloud and an on-premise data source like SAP HANA that enables the transmission of on-premise data to the cloud. It uses the SAP BTP Cloud Connector to establish a secure, or encrypted, channel called a tunnel between SAP Analytics Cloud and the customer network. The advantage of using a secure tunnel live data connection is that it allows the exchange and access to data between SAP Analytics Cloud and the on-premise data source via the SAP Cloud Connector with no data copied to SAP Analytics Cloud. In the example of SAP HANA, the client web browser is connected with SAP Analytics Cloud but not directly with the SAP HANA data source. The drawback is that this secure data will transit from the SAP HANA data source through the SAP BTP Cloud Connector, so it is a little bit slower than a direct live data connection. While no VPN client access is required for a tunnel live data connection, a new access control rule has to be set up in the SAP BTP Cloud Connector by the SAP system admin. It will allow a live connection to the on-premise data source in order to access the required data. Once a live connection has been created in SAP Analytics Cloud by the administrator, it is possible for data modelers to work with data from the cloud application by creating new live models in SAP Analytics Cloud.
