The Process of Setting up SAP BTP, Cloud Foundry Runtime, Using SAP BTP Cockpit

Getting Your SAP BTP Global Account

Having an SAP BTP global account is fundamental for accessing and managing SAP BTP Cloud Foundry runtime and other services provided by SAP BTP.

Watch the following video to discover the key steps of setting up your SAP BTP, Cloud Foundry runtime account.

Overview

SAP BTP offers two main global account types: trial accounts and enterprise accounts. Each comes with different flavors, such as pricing, availability, technical limits, and more.

  • Trial accounts are free, short-term, and suitable for individual non-commercial testing. These accounts expire after a set period and do not support data migration to a production system.
  • Enterprise accounts are suited for long-term business needs, providing access to productive environments with both free and paid plans, and include around-the-clock support for production use.
    • Paid plans are available in two commercial models:
      • Subscription-based model: provides predetermined resources for a fixed monthly fee, suitable for predictable workloads. Additional services can be accessed for an extra fee through contract modifications. For more information, check: What Is the Subscription-Based Commercial Model?
      • Consumption-based model: offers flexibility with access to all eligible services, billing based on resource usage – ideal for scaling operations. For more information, check: What Is the Consumption-Based Commercial Model?
    • Free plans: allow you to test services without cost under the consumption-based model, with technical limits. Once you reach the technical limits of a service and want to continue using it, you must move to a paid service plan. For more information, check Using Free Service Plans.

For detailed pricing information of SAP BTP, Cloud Foundry runtime, visit the service's Discovery Center. On the Pricing page, use the Commercial Model drop-down menu to explore various options and obtain comprehensive details, including technical features, pricing, and regional availability.

Registration and Access

To get a BTP global account, check out our Try and Buy page, and choose the option that works best for you.

Once registered, you should receive confirmation emails from SAP BTP with login credentials and links to access the SAP BTP cockpit. The cockpit is where you can manage your global accounts, subaccounts, entitlements, and members. Check Navigate in the Cockpit for detailed instructions.

Creating Subaccounts

To develop and deploy applications, use services, and subscribe to business applications provided by SAP, you must create a subaccount.

Instructions for creating a subaccount can be found in this document.

For trial accounts, a subaccount is precreated.

Enabling Cloud Foundry

  • Navigate to the Cloud Foundry Environment section in your subaccount and select Enable Cloud FoundrySAP BTP cockpit Subaccount page with the Cloud Foundry tab opened and Enable Cloud Foundry button highlighted.
  • A configuration dialog box displays. Here you can set parameters such as instance and organization names, and service plans. After customization, choose Create to activate the environment. This process usually completes within a few seconds. The Enable Cloud Foundry window.
  • Upon successful activation, the environment's status and details such as the API endpoint and organization name will be displayed in the Cloud Foundry Environment section.

For guided steps, consider using the SAP BTP Booster Prepare an Account for Development, which provides interactive steps for setting up a subaccount and enabling Cloud Foundry.

Provisioning and Managing SAP BTP, Cloud Foundry Runtime Service

While the preceding step establishes the foundational technical infrastructure, this step focuses on allocating the necessary computational resources (runtime memory) within the SAP BTP, Cloud Foundry runtime environment. The entitlements and quotas for SAP BTP, Cloud Foundry runtime are directly configured at the subaccount level. Specifically, the Cloud Foundry organization within the subaccount is assigned a resource quota plan that defines the available computational resources, such as memory, disk space, and service instances. These quotas are then reflected in the Cloud Foundry environment, ensuring the subaccounts have the necessary computing power and memory to execute applications effectively. By managing entitlements in this way, administrators can control and distribute resources across multiple applications within the organization, ensuring efficient use of the platform's computational capacity.

Understanding Entitlements and Quotas

  • Entitlements are the rights to provision and consume specific SAP BTP services, such as SAP BTP, Cloud Foundry runtime.
  • Quotas are the numeric limits on the consumption of a service plan within a global account and its associated subaccounts.

Entitlements are managed at the global account level, where service plans and their allowed quotas are distributed to subaccounts. These resources are then consumed by the subaccounts. As subaccounts release unused quotas, they become available for reallocation at the global account level. For more information, check the Managing Entitlements and Quotas using the Cockpit.

Assigning Resources

To assign entitlements and quotas for SAP BTP Cloud Foundry runtime to your subaccount, follow the step-by-step instructions outlined in the Initial Setup of SAP BTP, Cloud Foundry Runtime guide.

Summary

In this lesson, you've discovered the essential steps to set up SAP BTP, Cloud Foundry runtime, using the SAP BTP cockpit. You should now be able to explain the account creation process, subaccount configuration, Cloud Foundry activation, and resource management through entitlements and quotas.
