Diving Deep into the Four Key Areas: Robotic Process Automation, Machine Learning, Generative AI, and Situation Handling

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to analyze the four key areas of SAP Business AI, and explain their role in enhancing business processes

Key SAP Business AI Areas

SAP has embedded AI into its products for many years, from journal reconciliations in S4 to AI-powered writing assistants aimed to streamline tasks.

These innovative functionalities are not merely theoretical but are practically applicable, ensuring admins, managers, and employees can operate more efficiently. In fact, these innovations exist across all the functions in your SAP landscape such as procurement, finance, and human resources.

Automation is pivotal for managing manual and repetitive tasks, especially those involving the consolidation and manipulation of data from diverse sources like MS Excel, vendor portals, and SAP systems. SAP provides a number of features across all the business functions to accelerate these initiatives, as shown below.

The image describes how automation is suited to the task with process automation helping to execute steps and situation andling helping to anticipate and detect exceptions.

Robotic Process Automation

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is a business process automation technology that uses virtual software robots, also known as digital robots or bots, to perform manual, time-consuming work or tasks.

Robotic process automation technology handles a variety of activities, including

  • Manual and repetitive tasks: Interactions with data from multiple sources, such as Microsoft Excel, vendor portals, and other sources
  • High-volume tasks: Process steps that must be completed time after time, for example, data migrations and approval workflows
  • Multiple system tasks: Access to different applications, like Web apps, RP solutions, third-party software, and others

Situation Handling

Situation Handling helps your business to run smoothly by automatically informing the right users about any situations that need their attention. This includes, for example, upcoming deadlines, delays, expiring contracts, and so on.

The main benefits of the solution are:

  • Inform users proactively
  • Gain business insights
  • Use situation data for optimization and automation
The graphic shows the two automation aspects of machine learning and generative AI which are described below.

Machine Learning

Machine learning is a subset of artificial intelligence (AI). It is focused on teaching computers to learn from data and to improve with experience – instead of being explicitly programmed to do so. In machine learning, algorithms are trained to find patterns and correlations in large data sets and to make the best decisions and predictions based on that analysis

Machine learning – and its components of deep learning and neural networks – all fit as concentric subsets of AI. AI processes data to make decisions and predictions. Machine learning algorithms allow AI to not only process that data but to use it to learn and get smarter, without needing any additional programming.

Generative AI

Already, generative AI – a term that once may have seemed like a concept pulled straight out of science fiction – has become an integral part of our everyday lives. It’s emergence within the larger field of AI represents a significant leap forward. To the capabilities of traditional AI – which can learn from data, make decisions, and automate processes – it adds the power of creation. This innovation paves the way for applications that were previously unimaginable.

For companies across all industries, generative AI is leading the way to the emergence of true "business AI" capable of helping organization automate processes, improve customers interactions, and drive efficiencies in myriad ways. From generating realistic images and animations for the gaming industry to creating virtual assistants that can draft emails or write code to creating synthetic data for research and training purposes, business AI can help companies improve performance across lines of business and drive growth well into the future.
