Using a Web Intelligence Document as a Data Source

Existing documents have valuable content and metadata that you can reuse when creating new documents.

In some cases, the semantics have been augmented with enriched metadata. The target document automatically benefits from these augmented semantics as is, which reduces the data preparation effort. Time dimensions, geo-qualified objects, or variables, for instance, can be reused as such, so you don’t have to go through the enrichment process twice.

When you create a document based on another document, the source document used as a data source exposes the following metadata to the target document:

• Dimensions, measures, attributes
• Hierarchies
• Time and geo dimensions
• Variables

In the query panel, you can select the objects from the source document that you want to add to the query. When running this query, the data is retrieved from the document source's data provider.

To refresh the data in the source document, you must either explicitly refresh the source document, or schedule the document and create an instance.

If you are reusing a scheduled document with multiple instances, the application relies on the Smart View parameter defined in the Central Management Console (CMC) to decide whether it should reuse the latest instance, or the document itself. If the source document is based on a relational .UNX universe and you've set up security filtering in the target document, the application filters the data set according to the Business Security Profile assigned to the current user.
