Getting a Holistic View

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to describe the big picture of SAP Enterprise Asset Management

What is the challenge?

A modern Enterprise Asset Management has to deal with a variety of different aspects and dimensions. The main goal, however, is always to optimize asset health and performance and develop strategies to minimize risk - at the lowest possible cost.

To achieve this goal in an increasingly complex world with a constantly growing digitization it is necessary to closely align business processes, business software and the cooperation with partners.

Life cycle of a technical asset, broken into four areas and eight steps, with relationships between these areas and steps. The four areas are risk, strategy, health, and performance. The steps are investment planning (between performance and risk), project definition (between risk and strategy), selection of vendors and project execution (in strategy), work safety (between strategy and health), maintenance management (between health and performance), procurement and shutdown (in performance).
  • The Design phase involves Investment Planning and Project Definition.
  • The Manufacture / Build phase consists of Selection of Vendors.
  • The Commission phase involves Project Execution.
  • The Operate / Maintain phase embraces Health and Safety, the Execution of Maintenance and the Procurement of Material and Services.
  • The Retire & Decommission phase involves Final Shutdown and Disposal of the asset.

The asset lifecycle involves (a cloud-based) cooperation between Manufacturer, Asset Owner and Service Provider.

Assets are expected to deliver a maximum of Performance which requires intelligent Strategies to guarantee a long-lasting and predictable Health. To find the right strategies it is vital to be fully aware of the Risk that every asset is subject to.

With SAP Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) in combination with various other SAP solutions you can plan, control and monitor the complete lifecycle of a technical asset.

Asset Owner and Service Provider

Both Asset Owner and Service Provider are confronted with a number of challenges and requirements when it comes to optimizing asset availability and TCO as well as minimizing technical and financial risk and continuously monitoring asset health.

These challenges and requirements can be managed by using the set of integrated SAP solutions for Enterprise Asset Management. The following fundamental requirements are covered by Enterprise Asset Management:

Perspective of the Asset Owner

The graphic shows steps in the maintenance process by SAP solution from the perspective of the Asset Owner.
  • The maintenance process can be started in various ways:

A telephone call, sensor data, planner etc.

  • In the Back Office, asset structures are modeled, orders and maintenance plans are created.

The solution is: SAP S/4HANA Asset Management.

  • Scheduling and Dispatching of orders can be done using an Add-On.

The solution is: SAP Resource Scheduling.

  • For Execution and Confirmation two mobile Apps are available.

The solution is: SAP Service and Asset Manager and SAP Maintenance Assistant.

  • Assets and Asset Data can be shared with partners in the cloud.

The solution is: SAP Business Network Asset Collaboration (BNAC).

  • Asset Risk, Health and Strategies can be monitored.

The solution is: SAP Asset Performance Management (APM).

Perspective of the Service Provider

The graphic shows steps in the service process by SAP solution from the perspective of the Service Provider.
  • The service process can be started in various ways:

A telephone call, sensor data, customer self service etc.

  • In the Back Office, asset structures are modeled, orders and contracts are created.

The solution is: SAP S/4HANA Service.

  • Planning, Scheduling and Dispatching of orders can be done using an Add-On.

The solution is: SAP Field Service Management (FSM).

  • For Execution and Confirmation a mobile App is available.

The solution is: SAP Mobile Field Service.

  • Assets and Asset Data can be shared with partners in the cloud.

The solution is: SAP Business Network Asset Collaboration (BNAC).

  • Asset Risk, Health and Strategies can be monitored.

The solution is: SAP Asset Performance Management (APM).

SAP Enterprise Asset Management (EAM)

SAP Enterprise Asset Management can use either SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Public Edition or SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Private Edition or On Premise - in combination with the cloud-based solutions for the Asset Owner or the Service Provider.

Note

The following training has the focus on the processes of the Asset Owner.

Deployment Models and User Experience

This image shows the deployment models :Public Cloud, Private Cloud and On Prem, Hybrid and Mobile - based on SAP Business Technology Platform with SAP Fiori Launchpad as the User Experience.

SAP offers the following deployment models:

  • Public Cloud: SAP deploys - multiple customers share one system.

  • Private Cloud: SAP deploys - one customer per cloud tenant.

  • On Premise: Customer deploys and has full customizing and extension capabilities.

  • Hybrid: Mix of the above models.

SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP)

SAP BTP is an enterprise platform-as-a-service that provides comprehensive application development services and capabilities, which lets you build, extend, and integrate business applications in the cloud.

SAP BTP is available in many regions around the globe. You can choose between data centers hosted by SAP and those run by our partner Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) providers (so-called Hyperscalers):

Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, Alibaba Cloud, and Google Cloud Platform.

User Experience

SAP Fiori Launchpad

Following the SAP UX strategy, the SAP Fiori Launchpad (FLP) is the common interface for all deployment models (Public Cloud, Private Cloud and On Premise). FLP supports different application types: Web Apps - Fiori (SAPUI5), Web Apps - Web Dynpro ABAP (WDA) and Transactions in the SAP GUI for HTML flavor.
