Managing Purchased Product Footprints using Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to manage purchased product footprints with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Manual Mapping.

Overview

In this lesson, you'll focus on steps five and six of the overall process flow. You will explore the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to map emission factors to products and product groups. The Manage Emission Factors app utilizes AI to propose mappings based on imported emission factors, significantly reducing manual effort. You'll also learn to manually map purchased products when necessary.

A flowchart outlining the steps to calculate a product's carbon footprint. Key actions include data uploading, mapping, and calculation. The process involves defining scope, selecting acquisition methods, and choosing between AI or manual mapping for emission factors. The steps five and six of the process flow which are generating AI mapping and reviewing and selecting the spend or average data calculation are highlighted with a dotted line.

Map Purchased Products and Purchased Product Groups Using AI

In the Manage Purchased Product Footprints app, the Products Without Footprints and Product Groups Without Footprints tabs display products and product groups without assigned emission factors. To include these in your calculations, you must map them to emission factors. You can view more details about a specific product or product group by selecting it in the table, which is helpful for identifying the plants to which the product or product group is assigned.

The video shows how to use AI to map emission factors to purchased products and purchased product groups.

Manually Map Purchased Products and Purchased Product Groups without Footprints

You can manually map emission factors to purchased products and product groups if you know the emission factor values or if you have the support of a Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) expert to calculate emissions. You can use the Manage Purchased Product Footprints app to do so.

The video shows the steps to manually map purchased products and product groups without footprints are listed below:

Note

The validity periods of released footprints must either overlap with or fall within the validity periods of their corresponding unreleased purchased product footprints.

To display products and product groups where data is mapped, navigate to the Released Footprints tab.

If you haven't specified a plant for a purchased product footprint, a single purchased product footprint is created that is applicable for all plants and suppliers maintained in the master data.

In a product group with released footprints, the quantity dimension is defaulted to Net Weight (Product UoM), which you can choose to update.

If you select a purchased product or product group to map, but do not provide the necessary data, they will not be mapped and will remain in the Products Without Footprints and Product Groups Without Footprints tabs.
