Managing Waste Footprint Calculations

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to calculate your organization’s waste footprints, using the emission data from waste disposed.

Overview

You've seen the overall process steps to calculate Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Scope 3.5 emissions using Waste Generated in Operation forms. In this training, you'll learn how AlmikaSoft’s Berlin plant uses SAP Sustainability Footprint Management to calculate the GHG footprints based on waste quantity.

The lesson focuses on the last six steps of the overall process flow.

The image depicts a flowchart with nine steps outlining a process for calculating and analyzing Scope 3.5 emissions from waste generated. It involves data input, scope definition, waste footprint creation, data collection, inventory calculation, and analysis of the contribution to overall corporate footprints. The last six steps of the process flow are highlighted with a dotted line.

Calculation Methodology

You can use the following three methods when calculating Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions based on waste.

  • Average-data method: Utilizes average emission factors and quantities of waste
  • Waste-type-specific method: Applies emission factors specific to waste types and treatment methods
  • Spend-based method: Focuses on the amount of money spent on waste disposal methods rather than waste quantities

Regardless of the chosen method, the basic calculation remains consistent, comprising a quantity or amount and an emission factor. You can select emission factors from the lifecycle assessment (LCA) data within the system, which includes default content from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Alternatively, you can directly input the CO2e amount.

GHG Data Collection

Based on the inventory scope, you initiate the formal workflow for collecting GHG data within the defined inventory scope.

Calculate Footprints

AlmikaSoft’s Berlin plant has previously performed periodic calculations for Scope 1, 2, 3.1, and 3.3. Now, it's conducting a delta calculation for Scope 3.5 emissions, which relate to generated waste. To achieve this, the plant has recorded Greenhouse Gas (GHG) data by location using the relevant Waste Generated in Operation form. Upon completing the form and triggering the periodic footprint inventory in the Calculate Footprints app, you will observe a hundred percent data recording completion status under the Data Readiness Check tab.

Most data types show 100% completion, except for Transport and External Emission data, which are skipped or unavailable.
