Variant BOMs can be used when you offer similar products with different header materials. Again these BOMs are only one BOM inside database.
Variant BOMs – Creation

You can create a variant in the following situations:
- A BOM does not already exist for the material.
- The base unit of measure of all variant materials is the same. This is because the base unit of measure of the BOM and that of the material master record must be the same.

Different Types of BOM

BOMs can be of the following types:
- Simple
- Variant
- Multiple
Variant Configuration

When you are dealing with multi-variant products, combinations of individual product features give rise to a vast range of variants. Complex products involve complex configuration tasks in both sales and production. A company that sells or produces products with variants must perform these configuration tasks quickly and accurately. However, this is not easy as product development cycles and life cycles of products are becoming shorter than ever before.
Standard product is a general term that defines a product manufactured in multiple variants. It covers all possible features of a variant product and, therefore, does not refer to one specific article.
The features of configurable products are defined in the SAP S/4HANA application as characteristics.
Often, there are inter-dependencies between the individual forms of a product. It is, however, likely that the combinations that are theoretically possible are not allowed.
Some combinations may not be allowed due to the following reasons:
- Technical
- Marketing and sales
For example, if you are ordering an expensive model of a motorcycle, you may only be able to have it in specific colors of paint and seats because of marketing and sales reasons.
