Creating Work Centers

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to create work centers

Work Center

Now we cover the question, who does assemble the components. You have to define whether you need a machine, labor or both information.

Default Work Centers

  • You can create a default work center for each plant and work center category.
  • If you create a work center without a template, a default work center is used if one exists. All screens appear blank if no default work center is created for the work center category and plant.
  • If you create a work center with a copy template, the default work center is irrelevant.

Work Center Integration

Now let's have a look at the work center integration.

Work Center Data

A work center contains several groups of data like basic data, default values, capacities, scheduling or costing.

A work center contains several groups of data that you can enter on various screens (tab pages).

The system copies the default values to the routing. You can use the Ref. Ind. checkbox to specify whether it is possible to change a default value in the routing.

Work Center: Standard Value Key

Work Center contain information like standard value keys, that are relevant for routings.

Work Center: Default Values

Work centers contain the default values which the system copies when you create an operation.

Work centers contain the default values which the system copies when you create an operation. You can change the default values in the operation, if necessary. However, if the default values are marked as a reference in the work center, you cannot make a change in the operation. The default values for work center maintenance are stored in Customizing, per plant for the order type.

Note

When setting up an SAP production planning system, define as much data as possible in work center maintenance.

The system copies the default values to routings or production orders and saves this data partly on various screens in the work center. Activity types are proposed (in routings and production orders) from the Change Work Center: Cost Center Assignmentscreen.

Standard Text for Operation Description

When you add your work center to a routing operation, a description is necessary. This description can be predefined inside work center.

Work Center: Capacity

Capacity information is essential inside logistic area. So let's have a look at the capacity information of a work center.

Capacity Header

The capacity header contain information about the availabilities of the work center inside company, or the number of used capacities for the work center.

Each work center can have one or more capacity headers to describe any limit to the work it can perform with reference to time. For capacity headers to function, they must be assigned as time to a work center. The capacity header contains all the necessary information to identify the available capacity for a constraint.

Capacity Header: Shift Definition

Inside your capacity header you are able to define your standard capacity offerings or a shift definition.

Work Center: Scheduling

You can enter operating times and formulas in the work center to calculate the duration of an operation. It could be a Queue or move time.

You can enter operating times and formulas in the work center to calculate the duration of an operation.

As a rule, however, the transport time should be determined by means of the location groups from the sequential work centers and the move time matrix in Customizing.

You can group work centers that are close together in a location group, which can be maintained in Customizing. On the scheduling data screen for the work center, you can assign the work center to a location group.

Queue time

You can maintain the queue time in the work center and in the routing operation. However, the system uses the queue time from the work center for scheduling only if you do not maintain a queue time in the operation. If reduction measures are necessary, the value is reduced from the normal queue time to the minimum queue time.

Move-Time

You can maintain the move separately. You can maintain a minimum and a normal time in the Interoperation times section of the Operation detail screen of your routing. If reduction measures are necessary, the system uses the minimum move-time for scheduling.

Note

The system uses the move-time matrix to determine move-times only if you do not enter any move-times in the Interoperation times section of the Operation detail screen.

Work Center: Costing

Next to capacity planning and scheduling information you have to define costing information.
