Introducing Material

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to describe a material

Master Data Objects in Production Planning

This training class covers the master data, which a relevant for Manufacturing. Watch the following video to get a first impression.

You can create and assign standard SAP texts to production planning (PP) basic data objects. You can use the SAP classification system to group PP basic data according to user-defined attributes.

Introduction to Material

Material Master

The material master contains all of the information about materials that a company designs, purchases, manufactures, stores and sells. For each material of a company a material master record is created, which is identified by a material number, a material type and industry sector.

The material record integrates data from different areas of a company. The material maintains all data in several centralized tables, based on relevance to a particular part of the organizational structure. The material is used by all SAP logistics applications.

Various departments in a company work with the same material, and each department wants to store different information on the material. To address this requirement, you can subdivide the material data as per the department to which it belongs, and every area of responsibility can have a material view. In this way, each department has its own material record view and is responsible for the correctness of the data.

Production Planning Functions

Production planning (PP) functions use the data that is maintained in the following views:

  • Basic data view:

This view includes general data, such as the material number, material description, base unit of measure, and technical data.

  • Classification view:

This view contains the user-defined class assignments for a material.

  • Materials planning view:

This view contains plant-specific data that is used in procurement planning.

  • Scheduling view:

This view contains plant-specific data that is used in scheduling materials for production.

Organization Levels of the Material

Whenever you work with material master, you have to take care on the organizational levels.

Some material data is valid for all organization levels, while the rest is valid only for specific levels. The hierarchical structure of the material is aligned with that of the company.

The following elements in SAP ERP directly impact production planning:

  • Client
  • Plant
  • Storage location

The hierarchical structure of the material helps you to manage the material data in the company centrally and to minimize data redundancy.

Material Tables

Some of the main material tables are as follows:

MARA

The MARA table in SAP S/4HANA contains the general material data that applies to the entire company. This data is stored at client level.

General material data includes the following information:

  • Material descriptions
  • Base units of measure
  • Conversion factors for alternative units of measure
MARC

The MARC table contains the data that applies to a plant and its assigned storage locations. This data is stored at plant level.

The following are examples of the data in the MARC table:

  • Material requirements planning (MRP)
  • Forecasting data
MARD

The MARD table contains data that applies to a specific storage location. The data is stored at storage location level (this is mainly the storage location stock).

The material is a link between several tables, defined by their relationship with the organizational structure.
