Describing the Prerequisites and Set-Up for the Solution

Objective

After completing this lesson, you will be able to identify the pre-requisites, including master data and dependencies necessary for setting up the SAP Order Management Foundation

Master Data

In this lesson, we will dive into the prerequisites and setup for using SAP Order Management foundation. We will be covering aspects such as the types of master data used by SAP Order Management foundation, various integration options for this data, other setup prerequisites, and how to initiate the business configuration.

One fundamental point to understand is the critical role master data plays within SAP Order Management foundation. This type of data is primarily used for mapping purposes. For instance, when deciding on which systems to route specific requests to, certain information about those systems may be required.

There are two key reasons master data exists within SAP Order Management foundation: order validation and support for multiple backends. The process of order validation considers if an order can be processed or if more information is needed. For example, an order may need to be put on hold if a product isn't valid for its intended route or if customer information is missing. This validation goes beyond just technical validation, such as checking if the API call was correctly formed. In the case of supporting multiple backends, the data may be represented differently in various systems. For example, the SKU on your website may be represented differently in your warehouse management system versus a third-party dropshipper. To address this, we use key mappings to look up the correct information to use in the right context.

The two main types of master data used in SAP Order Management foundation are product data and customer data, which is referred to as 'business partner' from a SAP S/4HANA point of view.

In the next chapter, we will see how you can integrate this master data, explore the other prerequisites for setting up SAP Order Management foundation, and start the business configuration.

Integrating Master Data

Master data is important information that guides the functionality of the SAP Order Management foundation (SAP Order Management foundation). Integrating data into your SAP Order Management foundation can be achieved in different ways depending on the type of data.

Diagram outlining integration options: 1) Product (one-time, subscription) via API; 2) Business Partner: SAP Master Data Integration (MDI) and API. Arrows indicate data flow to a database.

For product data, integration is achieved by feeding the information directly into SAP Order Management foundation through an API. This covers data for either one-time products or subscription products. The API works as the bridge to ferry important data from your products into the SAP Order Management foundation setup. This is a straightforward setup that doesn't require additional tools.

Business partner data, on the other hand, has a couple of different integration options.

Our main recommendation is to use SAP Master Data Integration if you already have access to it. SAP Master Data Integration offers a reliable and effective tool built specifically for the purpose of integrating data. This suggests a higher reliability as you're leveraging a tool designed with this purpose in mind.

However, if you're not already using SAP Master Data Integration or you're working with test and demo type systems, there's still an option to input your business partner data directly into SAP Order Management foundation using an API. This may be beneficial for short-term or provisional projects where the use of SAP Master Data Integration is not necessary or feasible.

Following, we'll discuss additional prerequisites for the setup process.

Other Prerequisites for SAP Order Management Foundation Setup

Aside from integrating master data, there are several other prerequisites for setting up SAP Order Management foundation.

List of requirements for SAP services, including a tenant license, SAP BTP global account with subaccount, and SAP Integration Suite with Event Mesh recommended. A graphic illustrating integration.

First, you need the tenant license. This license grants you authorization to use the software and should have been procured as part of your SAP package.

Next, you need to set up an SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) global account as well as a subaccount. SAP BTP is an open platform that offers various tools to help you manage your business. The global account is your main account, while a subaccount allows you to separate different environments like development, test, and production.

You'll also want to have SAP Event Mesh. Though not strictly mandatory, it's highly recommended because it enables you to receive event updates effectively. Event Mesh is a tool that simplifies the management of events in microservices architectures.

Another tool you might want to consider is the SAP Integration Suite. While it may not be necessary for all outbound and inbound contracts, the Integration Suite can simplify and speed up a lot of processes. It allows for smooth data connectivity and provides templates for several scenarios, which can save you time. For instance, the SAP Order Management foundation to SAP S/4HANA iFlow is already included in the suite, so you don't have to create it from scratch.

By ensuring all these prerequisites are met, you set a solid foundation for your SAP Order Management foundation implementation. In the next section, we'll cover how to initiate the business configuration process.

Business Configuration and Release Cycles

Moving on, let's discuss the business configuration process. This involves a series of different configuration screens. The details of each individual setup will be covered in the subsequent lessons.

It's worth noting that in SAP Order Management foundation, new features or enhancements to the business configuration are immediately available via API. These updates then swiftly follow in the business configuration screens as soon as possible. This means if a new feature or function is added to the SAP Order Management foundation business configuration, you'll be able to access this through the API immediately and see this represented in the configuration screens typically within the same release cycle. Occasionally, it might take a week or two to be reflected on the screens.

As a part of modern software practices, SAP Order Management foundation operates on a continuous release cycle. This practice, common with cloud software, means updates and new features can be continuously developed, tested, and released as they are ready, instead of being restricted to release windows (like once per quarter or bi-yearly).

For more information on SAP Order Management foundation, the documentation site and the API Hub are valuable resources to tap into. They provide in-depth guides, instructional tutorials, and updates that can enhance your understanding of the framework.

SAP Documentation and API Hub for Further Learning

The final part of this lesson brings attention to the additional self-learning resources made available to you by SAP. For in-depth information, comprehensive guides, and specific details, you can utilize the documentation site and API Hub provided by SAP.

The documentation site is an expansive resource library that houses detailed instruction guides, troubleshooting tips, FAQs, and more for various SAP products including SAP Order Management foundation. It is incredibly resourceful for enhancing your understanding of the tool and learning new functionalities.

On the other hand, the API Hub offers details on all the APIs, including those used in SAP Order Management foundation integration. Here, you can find specifics about each API like its functions, usage, and implementation.

Remember, these resources are not only references but also platforms for continued learning in your journey with SAP SAP Order Management foundation. Exploit them as needed to build your expertise and navigate more efficiently around the tool.

In the following sections, we will go into each of these resources and tools in greater detail, enabling you to make the most of what SAP has to offer.
