  • Assess marketability requirements for raw materials.
  • Analyse marketability assessments.
  • Memorize substance lists impact analysis.

Introduction and Overview to Marketability Requirements

Get to know the tasks and steps to be done and the apps to use for processing.

This image illustrates the hierarchical structure of a product's composition, detailing the material-based and analytical composition of raw materials and supplier raw materials, and their respective substances.

In the following, you will assess marketability requirements for our example product Antiseptic hand rub. This requires some prerequisites:

  • Foundation for these activities are the compliance views of the product and the related raw materials with maintained composition information.
  • In the previous chapter, we have created a specific substance list check and assigned this compliance requirement to a compliance purpose.
  • Now we will assign the compliance purpose to the product's compliance view. Doing so, you will see the propagation of compliance requirements (CRs) along the product hierarchy. This is essential to be able to assess the CRs on the applicable levels, which can be:
    • The product - unpackaged or packaged
    • The raw materials
    • The supplier raw materials assigned to a raw material
    • Substances, being the constituents of supplier raw materials, raw materials and of the product

Aggregated assessment results are automatically calculated per CR along the product hierarchy as appropriate for the CR's compliance pattern and assignment.

This image outlines the sequence of tasks and the roles involved in product marketability assessment and compliance from product data creation to sales document processing.
This image outlines the sequence of tasks and apps, represented by their tiles, with the role Product Stewardship Specialist - Product Compliance involved in product marketability assessment for products starting with managing basic compliance data, assessing marketability requirement to finalize with assessing products for markets.

The app Manage Basic Compliance Data – Unpackaged Products is the central app for Product Compliance. From this app, you can assess any data related to an unpackaged product:

  • Applications, Uses, Markets and Purposes
  • Compositions and Properties
  • Compliance Assessments and Market Assessments

The app Assess Marketability Requirements for Products is focused on processing unreleased Marketability Assessments. With the sort option, you can, for example, process a specific marketability requirement for all affected products or you can see all requirements not yet released for a specific product.

From the worklist, you directly navigate to the compliance assessment for a product.

The app Assess Products for Markets is to maintain the resulting marketability status for unpackaged and packaged products for the requested business processes of a market / country. For a requested country, you get all applicable marketability assessments with their individual result, so you can derive the resulting overall compliance status per business process.

You can also navigate to this app, when you view compliance assessments in the app Manage Basic Compliance DataUnpackaged Products.

This image outlines the sequence of tasks and apps, represented by their tiles, with the role Master Data Specialist - Product Compliance involved in marketability assessments with managing basic compliance data for raw materials and assessing marketability requirement for raw materials.

The app Manage Basic Compliance Data – Raw Materials is the central app for Product Compliance of Raw Materials. From this app, you can assess any data related to a Raw Material:

  • Assigned Materials and Compliance Purposes
  • Suppliers
  • Where-Used Information regards
    • Countries/Regions for production and sales
    • Applications and related unpackaged products
  • Compositions and Properties
  • Compliance Assessments

The app Assess Marketability Requirements for Raw Materials is focused on processing unreleased Marketability Assessments. With the sort option you can, for example, process a specific marketability requirement for all affected raw materials or you can see all requirements not yet released for a specific raw material.

From the worklist, you directly navigate to the compliance assessment for a raw material.

This image outlines the sequence of tasks and apps, represented by their tiles, with the role Master Data Specialist - Product Compliance managing suppliers' compliance and assessing marketability requirements for substances.

The app Manage Suppliers Compliance for Raw Materials supports you in retrieving compliance data from your suppliers. You set the processing status for the compliance data obtained from suppliers which is a major repository to safeguard compliance for your raw materials.

Accomplishing compliance assessments, allows you to derive the supplier status for a raw material and in the end, from a compliance point of view, if the raw material can be purchased from this supplier.

Opposite, you can block a supplier in case of compliance issues.

Suppliers’ status are aggregated to the raw material.

The app Assess Marketability Requirements for Substances is focused on processing unreleased Marketability Assessments. With the sort option, you can process a specific marketability requirement for all affected substances or you can see all requirements not yet released for a specific substance.

From the worklist, you directly navigate to the compliance assessment for a substance.

You must be aware that any compliance requirement assigned to a substance that originates from an unpackaged product or raw material, since you can not assign a compliance purpose with it’s compliance requirements directly to a substance.

On the other hand, an assessment on a substance is multiplied to any occurrence of the substance.

Process Overview

Understand the process to assess marketability for an unpackaged product.

This image displays the role of a Product Stewardship Specialist – Product Compliance, highlighting three main tasks and related apps, represented by their tiles: managing compliance data for unpackaged products, assessing marketability requirements for products with the number of products in progress, and assessing products for markets with the number of products awaiting assessment.

Business Role: Product Stewardship Specialist - Product Compliance

The end-to-end process may also involve the business role Product Stewardship Specialist – Product Compliance with assigned apps when it comes to the assessment of Marketability Requirements for Raw Materials or Substances.

This image outlines the workflow and roles involved in product data management, compliance, and marketability checks, detailing both automated and manual processes, and dividing tasks across lessons 2, 3, 4, and 5 of this learning.

Prerequisites from Compliance Data Foundation: Compliance Views for the unpackaged product and raw materials exist with detail data (examples):

  • Assignment of Compliance Purpose(s)
  • Released Composition Data
    • Material based composition - before and after production
    • Substance based composition
    • Legal deviations, in case required for specific Compliance Requirement Versions

With this data, the system processes automated compliance calculations. In this case, the resulting status is:

  • Compliant, the result is automatically released
  • Not Compliant, this status is assigned and the Compliance Requirement remains in process.

If no result can be calculated, the Compliance Requirement has the status Unknown and remains in status "In Process".

You process the assessments in specific apps for the:

  • unpackaged product
  • raw materials
  • substances being constituents of them

Assess Product

Assess product automated calculation and manual assessment.

This image outlines the example product World Health Organization's (WHO) hygienic hand rub formulation, specifying its key components: Ethanol 96, Hydrogen Peroxide 10%, Glycerol, and sterilized water, along with the analytical composition of the produced product.

For a pilot-production, we have the required raw-materials at hand.

These raw materials are assigned to the material based composition of our new product antiseptic hand rub.

While preparations for production are made, we will take care of the specific Compliance Requirements defined as internal product standards, especially the substance list check we have created in part 2.

With the compliance view created as described in the Compliance Data Foundation, having a released material based composition, automated compliance calculations are initiated.

You can now start the marketability assessment for the product antiseptic hand rub, in the app Manage Basic Compliance Data - Unpackaged Products, when you navigate to the related compliance assessments.

This image shows a screenshot of the SAP interface for managing basic compliance data for an unpackaged product, focusing on the example product WHO hygienic handrub, with assigned compliance purposes with the pandemic emergency support compliance purpose highlighted.

You pick the product with the newly assigned Compliance Purpose from Part 2. The newly assigned compliance purpose has added 4 Marketability Assessments to the unpackaged product’s Compliance View.

Now you navigate via View Compliance Assessments to process these assessments.

The image depicts the screen for managing compliance assessments of an unpackaged product with marketability assessments being In Progress and other being Released.

There are multiple triggers which initiate automated compliance calculations, examples of the most prominent are:

  • Assignment of new compliance requirements to a product’s compliance view
  • Release of a composition, for example, after applying changes – this can be on the Raw Material or Product level, material-based or substance-based composition
  • Release a Compliance Assessment – this can be on the Raw Material or Substance level
  • Approve, block or set supplier material to outdated
  • Assign new supplier raw material to a Raw Material

Any compliance calculation resulting in the status Compliant is automatically released.

The section In Progress only lists Compliance Requirements in status

  • Not compliant
  • Undecided
The first screenshot shows SAP's Product Stewardship Specialist - Product Compliance interface, highlighting a non-compliant marketability status of a compliance requirement assigned to the example unpackaged product WHO hygienic handrub. The second screenshot shows details of the assessment with highlighted navigation to the Assessment Details tab-page for further investigation on the resulting compliance status.

You find the product with the newly assigned compliance requirements calculated automatically.

Process Overview

Follow an example to understand marketability assessment for a raw material.

The image shows the the representing the apps Manage Basic Compliance Data - Raw Materials, Assess Marketability Requiremenmts for Raw Materials and Manage Suppliers Compliance for Raw Materials, which stand for the three main tasks when assessing compliance of raw materials.
This image outlines the composition of the example product WHO hygienic hand rub, detailing its material-based elements (Ethanol 96, Hydrogen Peroxide 10%, Glycerol, and sterilized water) and the analytical composition of Ethanol 96, which includes ethanol, water, and an unknown component.

Following our user story, we will now introduce a new supplier for one of our raw materials, here the Ethanol 96.

The sample we received from this local supplier was analyzed and the Supplier Raw Material Analytical Composition maintained. The Raw Material Analytical Composition was updated and released (for maintenance of compositions, see Compliance Data Foundation.

Upon these changes, Compliance Requirements were recalculated automatically.

In the role Master Data Specialist - Product Compliance you will now assess marketability requirements for the updated raw material to evaluate compliance with the new supplier raw material added.

This image outlines a flowchart depicting the processes, roles, and interactions involved in maintaining product compliance and marketability from the creation of product data to the processing of sales documents.

Assess Raw Material

Assess Raw Material and survey assessment details.

This image displays a screenshot of SAP's Raw Material - Analytical Composition interface for Ethanol 96, listing its substances, concentrations, and compliance assessments, the section Dependent Objects of the screen shows marketability requirements in status In Progress since automated calculation resulted in compliance status Not Compliant.

You see, all suppliers, next you have to check this Supplier Raw Material(s) for this raw material. The prohibited substance must be in the supplier raw material composition.

Regards Supplier Assessments, the status color in the status bar indicates, there are no supplier assessments available.

From the assigned suppliers, you can navigate to the assess the current compliance requirement for a specific supplier.

This is applicable, that is, in case the supplier grants compliance, which can not be calculated based on the composition of the supplier raw material.

Supplier Assessment

Derive course of action to restore compliance.

The screenshot shows the analytical composition of a supplier raw material. The compliance assessments for this supplier show a compliance requirement in status Not Compliant.

You find the identified incompliant substance methanol in the Supplier Raw Material Analytical Composition.

As a consequence, you decide to block the supplier, to restrain the identified incompliance.

The screenshot shows suppliers assigned to raw material Ethanol 96 with one supplier having supplier status Blocked. This status was set by the user since the supplier raw material contains a prohibited substance.

To get your raw material back to a Compliant Marketability Status, you now must revisit the analytical composition and assess marketability.

Composition Management

Adapt substance-based composition and restore compliance.

This image shows you the SAP's Analytical Composition screen, which displays details of a raw material Ethanol 96, including its analytical components, concentrations, changes since last release, and a history log of changes. The composition was adjusted by the Master Data Specialist - Product Compliance afer blocking one supplier due to the not compliant supplier raw material.

When you release the adjusted raw material analytical composition, marketability assessments are recalculated automatically.

Meanwhile you can check the history of the analytical composition.
