Understanding Integration in Transportation Management

Objectives

After completing this lesson, you will be able to:
  • Depict integration overview and integration concept.
  • Illustrate Dangerous Goods Processing in Sales Order-based Transportation Planning.

Integration Overview

Learn about the integration of dangerous goods processing in transportation planning.

This image provides a step-by-step workflow explanation for various specialists involved in creating and managing product data, dangerous goods regulations, sales orders, and outbound deliveries, divided into four lessons
This image depicts a flowchart showing the integration of dangerous goods (DG) processes across various lessons, including sales, delivery, transportation management, and purchasing, highlighting the steps and optional process paths involved

Integration Concept and Customizing

TM Integration with the Sales Order

Transportation Management (TM) integration with the sales order implies two steps to be processed:

  1. Freight Unit - representing the demand to transport materials. The freight unit is created automatically from the a sales order based on the assigned shipping condition. This is only processed, in case the shipping condition is defined for integration with TM in the related customizing
  2. Freight Order - this is the result of the transport planning. Based on the freight unit, the business role Transportation Planner plans the freight units by assigning these transport demands to concrete freight orders. Freight orders are contracted to freight forwarders or own transport resources.

The dangerous goods check is integrated into the Freight Unit and Freight Order as follows:

  • The result of the dangerous goods check is stored in the item status and the header status in the freight unit and freight order.
  • The execution of the dangerous goods check is automatically processed by the system and the item and header status are updated.

DG Check in Freight Unit / Freight Order

The dangerous goods check is integrated into the freight unit and freight order as follows.

Warning messages in the log are displayed in the document to inform the transportation planner about any issues when the dangerous goods check has one of the following item statuses:

  • Warning - Transport Restricted
  • Blocked - Decision Pending
  • Blocked - Transport Forbidden
  • When the dangerous goods check sets the item status to "Blocked - Decision Pending", a request from logistics is automatically created. If the relevant dangerous good assessments are not released or the regulation situation in a country/region is undefined (there is no entry for a country/region in the "Apply Regulations - Dangerous Goods" app), the dangerous goods expert receives a launchpad notification. From the SAP Fiori launchpad notification, the dangerous good expert can directly navigate to the affected object.
  • In case, there are items with status "Blocked - Decision Pending" or "Blocked - Transport Forbidden", this status will be reflected in the header status of the freight unit and freight order and thus will result in the freight unit and freight order being blocked.
  • A blocked freight unit is not considered in the TM planning, execution, and invoicing process until the block is removed.
  • A blocked freight order can't be finalized. It can not be contracted to a freight forwarder, the subsequent outbound delivery can not be created, and thus goods issue is blocked.
This image provides an overview of dangerous goods processing in transportation management, indicating that the transport permissibility check is available for Freight Units and Freight Order Road, but there is no output of dangerous goods data on document printout or via EDI (SOAP) for any transportation mode.
Activating the Dangerous Goods Integration into the Value Chain in S/4HANA enables integration for dangerous goods data in sales, delivery, purchasing, and transportation management, but it is not supported to use this integration concurrently with the dangerous goods integration of the Product Safety and Stewardship solution within the same S/4HANA system.

With the activation of the "Dangerous Goods Integration into the Value Chain" business feature in the Customizing, the integration for dangerous goods checks and documents with dangerous goods data is active in:

  • Sales
  • Delivery
  • Purchasing
  • Transportation Management with:
    • Freight Unit
    • Freight Order

Note

It is NOT supported within one S/4HANA system to use the dangerous good integration of the new S/4HANA for Product Compliance solution and in parallel the dangerous goods integration of Product Safety and Stewardship.

This image explains setting up sales document integration with transportation relevance in SAP Transportation Management by defining parameters such as sales organization, distribution channel, division, sales document type, and shipping condition, while emphasizing the need for the Dangerous Goods Integration into the Value Chain business feature.

When you have a sales document with transportation relevance, you process dangerous goods checks in a freight unit and freight order in Transportation Management.

A sales order with transportation relevance is identified by:

  • Sales organization
  • Distribution channel
  • Division
  • Sales document type
  • Shipping condition

These settings are defined in the Customizing for TM under "Integration".

Keep in mind, that, nevertheless, the "Dangerous Goods Integration into the Value Chain" business feature must be activated as a prerequisite.

Sales Order and Freight Unit

Create Sales Order with transportation relevance and follow creation of freight unit.

This image shows an SAP interface for creating sales orders, highlighting key fields that identify a sales order with transportation relevance, which include sales organization, distribution channel, division, sales document type, and shipping condition.

A sales order with transportation relevance is identified by:

  • Distribution channel
  • Division
  • Sales document type
  • Shipping condition
This image shows an SAP Sales Order screen with subsequent objects: where saving a sales order with transportation relevance automatically creates a related freight unit and initiates a planned delivery.

Upon saving the sales order with transportation relevance, a related freight unit is created automatically.

This image displays the SAP Transportation Management system interface, focusing on the Transportation Planner role which involves managing freight units as part of the manual transport planning process.

The "Transportation Planner" role takes care of planning the transport demand, represented by the freight unit.

In the manual transport planning process, the freight unit is assigned to a freight order.

As the first step, you check the freight unit to be planned.

This image illustrates how a Transportation Planner can use the Manage Freight Units app in SAP to monitor the dangerous goods status of a freight unit at both the header and item levels.

Having the "Transportation Planner" role, you pick up a freight unit in the "Manage Freight Units" app.

Here, you can check the dangerous goods status of a freight unit on header and item level.

Outbound Delivery from Freight Order

Finalize Transportation Planning by creating Outbound Delivery from Freight Order.

This image shows a screenshot from SAP's Edit Road Freight Order interface, indicating that since the Dangerous Goods status is OK – Transport Allowed, a subsequent outbound delivery can be created from the completed freight order.

Having no "Blocked" status, you can now create the subsequent outbound delivery out of the just finished freight order.

This image depicts the process flow of a sales order, highlighting the creation of an outbound delivery and detailing the involvement of the freight unit and freight order in successful transport planning within an SAP interface.

In the process flow of the initial sales order, you find the now created outbound delivery, along with the freight unit and freight order being subject to the now successfully finalized transport planning.

This image demonstrates how a Shipping Specialist uses the Manage Outbound Deliveries app in SAP to process a newly created outbound delivery, including checking the status of dangerous goods.

You change into the "Shipping Specialist" role and pick up the just created outbound delivery in the "Manage Outbound Deliveries" app for further processing.

Dangerous goods checks are processed based on the TM route planning on the newly created outbound delivery.

You can check the dangerous goods status on item and header level.
